As an apprentice in a highways design and maintenance team my role can cover drainage and carriageway plane and inlay. However, I'm based in the A roads team which focuses on maintaining all A class roads in the county. To do this I'm able to go on site visits to inspect roads and help with the design. Back at the office I take the design and draw it up on AutoCAD. After the initial design I start on helping manage the project and look at the health and safety aspects involved with such projects. Every day can vary as to what my role is. As well as the site visits and CAD work, I help liaise with local police and network management teams regarding road closures.
I'm gaining a level 3 qualification through a college course. This course helps broaden my knowledge beyond what I do at work. In the workplace I've managed to increase my AutoCAD knowledge. Taking minutes and chairing meetings has also helped to improve general skills.
Although the work may not always be easy I really enjoy it. I have a very supportive team that help me whenever I get stuck on a job. Arup as a company take seriously the well being of their employees. The company culture is very friendly and supportive. The senior management within Arup are very welcoming to new employees and take a personal interest in making sure you feel comfortable at Arup.
Arup view recognition and appreciation as an integral part of the company's culture. All employees are made to feel that they are appreciated and that the work they do is important no matter how small it may seem. The management within Arup is very supportive and make sure that everyone feels they are appreciated.
The induction and training within Arup is well organized. The college's organization is not as good however the teaching is very good. Within the team, the hierarchy is known however it does not make anyone feel inferior to others .
My college tutors are very supportive and do their best to help without giving their students all the answers. Whenever an issue arises they do their best to help out.
My manager and others within Arup are very supportive. They do their best to help with any problems I have. It's very easy to find help within Arup. If someone doesn't know the answer to your question they will know who can.
Personally my salary meets all the living and travel costs I have. Arup value the work their apprentices do and do not just pay the minimum apprentice wage.
There are several events every month. These can be company and team events. There is quite a lot of interaction within the local community.
Yes
I'd recommend Arup because they offer an exciting and always changing working environment. They value all their employees regardless of their grade and try to make a company where everyone feels appreciated. They also offer all the support you need to gain more skills and further your career.
Arup are looking for people who work well with others. They do look for good grades at school, but they also look for who you are as a person and what you can bring to the company.
