on a day to day basis I come in and run a cnc lathe and am expected to hit a target number of components however due to the fact that I am an apprentice I am also able to have constant support by my colleges if I need it which allows me to feel confident when I am running the machine.
Before starting my apprentership I had very little knowledge on engineering at all and since taking on the apprentership I have developed all my workshop skills such as turning and milling, also my theoretical knowledge on aspects such as material science and modelling packages have improved significantly. Also I have been trained fully to receive my NVQ level 3 certificate which now means I am a fully skilled machine man.
My program is very good and I have to say quite enjoyable this is because my apprentership program has such a good structure where I have been able to meet most of the site employees and try out what it is like to work in the different areas around site. The constant change and constant availability to learn and develop new skills is what makes my programme enjoyable.
At Cummins I feel very valued I feel like they listen to me and always look out for my best interests this is mainly down to the fact that I have had the opportunity to meet so many of the site employees and this has boosted my confidence to be able to talk to people easier which has ultimately made me feel more valued at work.
The programme is very well organised and structured, I have had the opportunity to work in most aspects of the company and I always know what my goals and targets are and what I need to achieve by the end of my rotation. At the beginning of my rotation I was given a piece of paper detailing when and where I would be working around site and that has been very easy to follow and stick too ensuring that I have not ever felt like I don't know what I am doing.
My training provider is quite good they are very easy to access and always have time for me if I have any concerns or issues. However sometimes individual tutors can come across as very forward and not always that understanding however overall they are a good training provider and I feel that they provide me with what I need to pass my course.
My employer provides me with a good amount of support mainly through setting up regular meetings where they ask me how I am doing and I can express any concerns or issues that I have. The only issue is sometimes they can be unavailable and this is not communicated to us so I have no idea how long they will be away for but other than that the support from my employer is very good.
My salary is very good because as I become more qualified and more of a value to the company they increase my salary meaning that I never feel like I am been worked to hard for what I am rewarded also the salary was discussed at the beginning of my apprentership and they told me what I would start on and how much it would go up by when I became more qualified meaning that I was fully aware of the pay scheme.
There are many opportunities outside of work that Cummins lead and there all of different variety's. I like taking part of the outside of work opportunities and the process of going on these activity's are very good because they give you a set date and time meaning that you can tell your supervisor in advance so there are no issues about you been out for the day. However there are not many opportunities that meet my personal interests but overall there is a wide selection of opportunities outside of work.
Yes
I would recommend Cummins to a friend mainly because I always feel wanted and welcome at work and I don't really think there is anyone that I don not get along with. Also I never fear or hate coming into work and to anyone who thinks an apprentership is the route for them or just engineering in general I would defiantly say that Cummins is a good and valued place to work.
To anyone applying to Cummins all I would say is try your best and put effort in also I would tell anyone not to shy away from what Cummins has to offer and to take any available opportunities that may arise and also finally get to know every one because everyone is very friendly and approachable and this makes working at Cummins much easier.
