My Job title is Software Engineer, and day-to-day I do just that ;-) Currently I'm part of Capgemini's Applied Innovation Exchange, this involves working on short projects that focus on a specific emerging technology. For example I have done a lot of work with facial and emotional recognition. I do write a lot of code however that is not all, I contribute to documentation and design discussions as well as going on client site to do demos and presentations. I am going on a Dynamics 365 training course, which will hopefully lead to work in the Dynamics CRM field. This will significantly changed my day to day role as I will be focusing on one specific technology.
Before joining Capgemini I had a good understanding of programming concepts and Java. I have significantly developed my understanding of programming concepts as well as learning a bunch of new languages and skills for example, Javascript, React.js, Firebase, C#, ASP.net CORE, Azure, Bluemix... to name but a few. I am currently aiming to take my Dynamics CRM Configuration and Customisation Specialist exam later this month and plan to sit the Azure developer exam by the end of the year. I have also been given the opportunity to present to clients and this has greatly improved my confidence when presenting and talking to senior people.
The programme and Capgemini in general exceeded my expectation. I enjoy the fact that I can learn theory in the evening and weekends while working towards my degree and then be able to directly use that in work the next week. The people and culture of Capgemini make it a truly enjoyable place to work.
I have recently been recognised via our internal system for some work that I did over the pase 4-6 weeks, this makes me feel very valued. Combining that with some feedback I have received for some other things make me feel very valued by Capgemini.
The programme is well structured and contains and inital training period that I feel sets you up for both work and the degree well. However the organisation of some resources on the universities side is a bit disappointing. For example the virtual learning environment, that being distance learners we rely on quite heavily, is very unorganised and it can take some time to find what you are looking for. However there is a quarterly call with Capgemini and Aston university (our education provider) where issues like this are discussed, so I hope that during the next one Aston will agree to put in place a more organised solution. I think that it is important that Capgemini organise this call as it allows the students to directly influence the degree that they are getting, allowing to be as best as possible.
As much as I want, my training provider is very helpful in everyway possible. We are treated as full students of Aston university. I could even use the facilities at Aston university if it wasn't a 3 hour drive away ;-). Aston provide "office hours" in which we can book a slot with the relevant tutor/lecturer where we can ask for help etc, this works well as all of the tutors/lecturers can be contacted remotely so I can get help from the office.
Again really as much as you need, not only do you have the support you would expect from a full time job, HR helpdesk, It helpdesk, personal problems helpline, pay and progression framework etc. But also anyone is will to spare some time to help you out with any problem you might have, they are as supportive as possible!
The initial package covers my costs and there is a pay and progression framework that gives you the opportunity to earn pay rises and promotions, just like any other employee!
This really depends on the team you join, but I have had plenty of opportunities to socialise with work colleagues. There is a company xmas party every year as well as other things like a group of people do the palace-to-palace together every year too.
Yes
I would recommend Capgemini for either a technical or non-technical role, the culture and way that people conduct themselves at Capgemini really makes to feel involved and valued, they care about you as a person and really have your best interests at heart.
The application process is quite long, so don't get disheartened if you don't hear back quickly! Be yourself, I know it sounds cliche but Capgemini really want to get to know you so that can put you where you belong in the company, they can't do that if you pretend to be someone you aren't! During the interview (which is the final step) make sure you go into as much detail as possible as due to the way Capgemini interview they can't ask follow up questions even if what you're talking about is really interesting to the interviewer!
