  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an apprentice with Network Rail employed under IP Signalling. After spending 6 months at Network Rail training centre carrying out my BTEC Level 3 I have moved to the design office. I carry out a range of task, normally following someone else directions. this way I am learning a lot, quickly while part of a team. my next step is joining the maintenance depot where I will get and idea of other business areas.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed many of my existing skills and have learnt so many more. Although the teaching at Westwood was not the best, when with a actual team the learning is excellent.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am now enjoying it a lot however the first 6 months where filled with miss communication and lack of management how could tell you information regarding the scheme.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Network Rail?
  • At the apprenticeship training centre I did not feel a valued employee and felt like the runt of the company. now in a team in my placement however, I feel extremely valued.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very poorly organised with a lack of knowledge on what are apprenticeship actually was, with no one who could answer the question.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Babcock instructors offer a lot of their time to make sure you understood and passed the course. Network Rails in house trainers could not be faulted.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In my Depot I receive loads of support and guidance and can freely raise query's. When I was at the actual training centre for my first 6 months though, management had little idea on what was happening.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I have very limited outgoings and do not have to travel very far, so the package suites me fine.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have regular drinks out of work with the team and this opportunity is great for socialising and networking!

  • Yes

  • Once you get through the terrible start, you are valued and encouraged to progress.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • Nothing is trying to trip you up! It's all there to ensure you are best placed in the company. Nevertheless the long waits are still stressful!
