I am an apprentice with Network Rail employed under IP Signalling. After spending 6 months at Network Rail training centre carrying out my BTEC Level 3 I have moved to the design office. I carry out a range of task, normally following someone else directions. this way I am learning a lot, quickly while part of a team. my next step is joining the maintenance depot where I will get and idea of other business areas.
I have developed many of my existing skills and have learnt so many more. Although the teaching at Westwood was not the best, when with a actual team the learning is excellent.
I am now enjoying it a lot however the first 6 months where filled with miss communication and lack of management how could tell you information regarding the scheme.
At the apprenticeship training centre I did not feel a valued employee and felt like the runt of the company. now in a team in my placement however, I feel extremely valued.
Very poorly organised with a lack of knowledge on what are apprenticeship actually was, with no one who could answer the question.
Babcock instructors offer a lot of their time to make sure you understood and passed the course. Network Rails in house trainers could not be faulted.
In my Depot I receive loads of support and guidance and can freely raise query's. When I was at the actual training centre for my first 6 months though, management had little idea on what was happening.
I have very limited outgoings and do not have to travel very far, so the package suites me fine.
I have regular drinks out of work with the team and this opportunity is great for socialising and networking!
Yes
Once you get through the terrible start, you are valued and encouraged to progress.
Nothing is trying to trip you up! It's all there to ensure you are best placed in the company. Nevertheless the long waits are still stressful!
