My role as a mechanical engineering apprentice at Cummins Turbo Technologies varies on a daily basis as I am situated in the Laboratory Operations section of the company. This involves performing various tests on current and future turbocharger products for data analysis by the engineers on site. Turbochargers are tested in cells powering the turbo units solely, by use of burning fuel to simulate exhaust gas flow. Turbocharger are also tested fitted up to an engine on the beds we have on site.
I have learnt how to build & fit up turbochargers, and operate test cells and beds safely. My mechanical aptitude has developed as well as on the spot thinking and coming up with solutions for unexpected problems that arise. I continue to learn from the technicians and engineers I work alongside with.
I thoroughly enjoy this apprenticeship programme with Cummins. I have learnt a lot and the scope for expanding my skill set is great. The work environment is also something I appreciate.
