I am an Oracle Developer, supporting the IT systems of a large public sector client. Day to day, I write code fixes and work to understand the issues a user faces.
I have learnt PL/SQL programming skills, as well as wider problem solving/logic skills. Since joining, I have also developed my professional skills as this was my first "real job".
I very much enjoy my programme, as there is a broad range of tasks I get to carry out day to day, and I work in a friendly, interesting team. There are lots of apprentices at Capgemini which helps ensure I don't feel isolated.
I do feel valued by Capgemini, especially based on the rapid promotion/progression programme that is in place. We are continually told that we are the future of the business, and this can be seen day to day.
As Capgemini were the first UK provider of degree apprenticeships, my programme is impeccably well organised as they have learnt from any mistakes made with previous cohorts.
I receive lots of support from my training provider, through weekly online lectures and regular on campus sessions. Tutors are available for one-to-one conversations on request.
I have a dedicated reviewer who manages my progression in the company, but others are available for general career advice should I need it. There is also an apprentice program team for general queries.
Initially I feel the starting salary was too low, and relied on apprentices living with their parents. However, as you are promoted within the company the salary rises to a more acceptable level. I feel the initial salary needs to be reviewed to ensure it is in line with competitors.
There are lots of opportunities to get involved in "Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability" events, particularly involving local schools. These events add variety to my job role.
Yes
Definitely, as I feel that the programme offers a far superior experience to simply doing a degree at university, as you are able to gain relevant work experience at the same time.
Be true to yourself and don't stress about grades (as long as you meet the minimum requirements). Capgemini seem to prefer those with a hunger to learn rather than those who think they know everything already.
