As a Tech Apprentice in Leonardo you cover many different tasks due to the 3 month department rotation. This can be mechanical engineering (CAD) or electrical/electronics (PCB design) plus loads more.
I've gained many skills through the apprentice program. some of these are gained through college (HNC/HND) while others are gained on site, working on real jobs. it has also developed my Microsoft office skills which are always in use.
The work in Leonardo for apprentices is very relaxed. I believe this is a good thing as most departments and supervisors focus on learning rather than just doing the crap jobs no one wants.
I've had many internal awards (shopping vouchers) for helping with STEM related activities within the company. Also, recognition can be gained through the intranet when a story is put up about what you've achieved.
It is very well structured with placements mapped out in advance. So you know what departments you'll be going in for the next year. We have assessors that give advice on SVQ work, and a business mentor can be set up when needed.
Edinburgh college provide us with the external training for HNC/HND. they do a good job keeping moodle updated with what work needs doing.
the apprentice team in Edinburgh do a great job supporting all 72 apprentices currently on-site. sometimes it can be difficult to cater for all 72, but most of the time they'll always help you as much as possible
As an apprentice, our wages are very good relative to other apprentices. Have no issues running a car back and fourth to work for the full month. Still have money to spend on other lifestyle things.
There are many opportunities outside of work as we are now connected to the STEM EAST hub. This allows us to participate in STEM events all over Scotland.
