I am a Technical apprentice and my days at work usually consist of learning to design PCB's as well as writing log books or compiling evidence for my SVQ qualification. I interact with those in and outside my working group in order to complete my tasks for the day. I currently have a project to design a PCB layout for a control card.
I have learned a variety new skills throughout my apprenticeship from electronic testing, using design tools to create new models and learning about how to manage a project. I have done my HNC graded unit for engineering systems and I have been to several awareness sessions internally. Also I have developed better communication skills and developed my own knowledge on some of the processes within Leonardo.
I enjoy working within Leonardo, every team I have worked with have always been helpful and supportive. The company itself puts a lot of time into the apprenticeship programme and it went beyond my expectations.
I feel valued every area I have worked in the manager has told me I have done a good job over my time working with them. Also there is the chance to be recognised and rewarded for your efforts through the apprentice of the year programme.
Very organised receive initial training before coming to work on site, which afterwards we move every three months to new areas on site developing skills in all faculties. Assessors are available at all times to support with the SVQ and there is support offered if we struggle with college work.
I receive a lot of support, information on upcoming training and help with any training I am undertaking.
I receive all the support I need from my employer in regards to any issue I have
I feel the wage we are on is sufficient as it is a higher amount than a typical apprentice so I it covers all my costs, however the accelerated pay scheme towards the end of my apprenticeship I do not agree with as once we finish we should be paid the average for a qualified technician right away and not gradually work towards it.
Yes there are loads of opportunities outside of the work involving volunteer work for charity or to support school events hosted by Leonardo. opportunities to travel with the company during the apprenticeship as I went to London during my time in project management. There are also several groups at the work who host sports events for other employees such as 5 a-side football.
