I am an apprentice technician, working within the services team at ARUP. On a day to day basis I work alongside services engineers to model and design mechanical and electrical systems. I use programs such as Autocad and Revit.
I have learnt so much during my first few months at Arup as the team are willing to answer any questions I have and take time to explain why and how services work. I have learnt new CAD skills as i am now using Revit and autocad every day to model and design new services systems. Different training courses and CPDs have also encouraged my development.
I thoroughly enjoy the programme. The team are lovely and are willing to help when an issue occurs. They have made me feel very welcome. The apprenticeship itself is interesting and well structured, providing me with a clear path for career development and further learning.
I do feel valued by Arup even though i have a lack of skills. I am always given work to do on projects, which encourages my development and learning. The team is values my skill set even though i do have a lack of experience and knowledge.
I think my programme is well structured. There was a quick start when i first joined, with training starting from day one. I was inducted to college quickly too and started almost immediately which i think is important as it meant i was getting into a routine almost instantly. My induction in the office was done thoroughly, with a general office induction and then a more informal induction by the team.
I do receive a lot of support from college. If i have any issues with the assignment briefs they are willing to help. The tutors are contactable during the week for me to ask any necessary questions, and they will always do their best to help me achieve my best. My only criticism is the college course, though it is about construction and the industry, it is very general and at the minute doesnt really help me at work.
Arup provide different training opportunities, internal (CPDs etc), external (manufacturer tours etc) and on moodle (ARUP University). The different training courses are offered to me in order to help me with career development and further learning. Similarly, the team are very supportive on a day to day basis.
My salary is more than enough to cover what expenses i have and for the area in which i work and live. It is enough to fund any work expenses as well as funding my social life. The 6 month salary review is also a good way to know your wage is continuously being looked at to make sure it is appropriate.
There are a variety of opportunities outside of work which include charity fundraisers, different activities etc. There is an active social committee within the ARUP office which organises a variety of social events. Similarly, external companies will approach the office to offer events due to the relationship Arup has with people who we have worked alongside. There are also education opportunities outside of work.
Yes
Overall, Arup is a kind and friendly environment with many opportunities for personal and career development. If engineering and construction is the industry you want to go into, Arup is amazing for providing the training and opportunities needed for you to gain experience and knowledge.
Make sure you are a whole-rounded person, with a well developed skill set as ARUP isnt just about engineering, it is about being able to communicate with other, learn from your mistakes, teach others, manage your time effectively etc etc. So just being "good at STEM subjects" is only one part of the application.
