As a CAD technician in the building services team I work closely with engineers on a daily basis. Using advanced modelling software, on a variety of different projects, I spend most of my time drawing on the computer. From modelling ventilation to the odd site visit, no two days are the same and always provide a new challenge.
I am currently studying at college to obtain my Level 3 BTEC in Building Services Engineering. A long side this qualification I gain lost of experience at work and pick up on new skills and techniques all the time. I have massively developed thinking skills as I face new challenges everyday and need to be able to overcome any problems that occur.
Arup is a great company and reward their staff for the excellent work that they do. The team that I work with are friendly, very intelligent and are a pleasure to work with. Arup completely exceeded my expectations and I am so proud to be where I am.
Being an apprentice at Arup is the complete opposite of the stereotypical apprenticeship. I feel as though you are valued so much as an apprentice and you feel like an important part to the team. You are shown respect by all members of staff no matter what level they are making it a brilliant environment for you to work and improve.
I think that the programme is organised very well. The induction was clear and outlined the structure of the apprenticeship programme. The support and training you receive is professional. You are sent to college on a day release allowing you to study, learn and obtain a qualification. Managers are constantly checking to ensure you have the right amount of work load to be getting on with.
General support is provided by the external training provider and I stay in touch with them for if I ever need help with anything. The "tutor" is willing to help me as much as he possibly can.
I feel very comfortable with asking anyone that I work with for help and everyone in the team is always happy to lend a hand when ever it is needed.
As work is in the centre of town getting there can be costly however I don't live to far away. Being relatively young I don't have to many bills to pay for. Overall the salary is very good for an apprentice.
Arup is always having socials and seasonal events. There are a few sporting activities available such as a weekly 5-a-side football game.
Yes
Arup is an amazing company with years of experience. You are looked after and treated with a lot of respect. You are given so many opportunities to help you grow and meet new people.
Make sure you do your research on the company and the role you are applying for. Make an effort to impress the interviewer like bringing work in to show (something engineering related/relates to your role). Practise interview questions. Be yourself!
