I work as an audit junior at BDO in the financial services sector. We perform statutory audits on medium sized companies, mainly in the city. I work on each client for an average of 2 weeks and get to work with different groups of colleagues on most clients.
I have now achieved my CFAB qualification since starting the school leaver programme and have now progressed onto the ACA. I have learnt multiple new skills used in everyday scenarios at work. I have also built on skills, namely people skills as BDO is a very sociable place and in our work we are client facing every week.
I have learnt a great set of skills from BDO to date and know that I will continue to develop these skills further over the coming years. BDO culture has lived up to my expectations. This is helped my the open office plan and the openness of all staff whether it is a junior or partner. No week is ever the same because we are always working with a new set of colleagues and a different client team. This enables you to build new relationships and continue to build on your knowledge in your sector.
At BDO we are allocated both a counselling manager and partner. They help to guide you through your training contracts, work and personal issues. Frequent meetings to discuss performance allows continuous feedback - both positive and negative and opportunities for recognition and reward. I have received both praise and rewards in my time at BDO.
Induction was detailed. Training is planned well and communicated to you. As a school leaver we are not treated any different from those colleagues on a graduate programme, but there is a slight difference in roles with school leavers holding less responsibility because of having sat fewer exams.
Received good support from tutors whilst in college and out of college before exams if you require further guidance. Tutors are always willing to stay behind during the day or at the end of the day to help with any problems you may have.
As the majority of people in our work have completed our ACA exams they are always accepting of our studying timetables whilst in college and the weeks following college prior to the exams. In my experience the staff are always supportive if you have issues with college work or personal issues which may affect your time in college or when you take the exams.
