I am a substation apprentice. Thorough the majority of the first year I am situated at National Grid's "Our Academy" where I learn basic skills to do with my on-site job. When I am not at the academy I am on the site where I will work when I qualify from my apprenticeship and learn on job skills with the rest of the team.
I am currently doing a Level 3 qualification and have learnt a plethora of skills which otherwise I don't think I would have learnt.
The work I do is challenging and enjoyable. Learning new skills is also very enjoyable and I have learnt many skills at Grid since I was employed which I find fulfilling and enjoyable.
I feel rather valued and I would say that hard work never tends to go unnoticed and lots of appreciation from both my manager and workmates is given when a good job is done.
The programme is pretty well organized, however some things are poorly organized at times such as some of the training courses I have attended.
I have a review every ten weeks which provides useful and constructive feedback from both my training provider and employer.

The salary is great. All my travel is reimbursed too which helps out a lot.
There are a few company events and activities outside work, however I would like to see more opportunities outside of work.
Yes
National Grid is a great company to work for. I have learnt many skills that I don't think I'd have learnt if I didn't work for Grid. The job is enjoyable, the people I work with are all good people, and the pay package is excellent.
Research a lot about the job and about the company before your interview or assessment day.
