The role is a maintenance role. The majority of the job is a mixture of planned electrical maintenance and breakdown cover, and occasionally provides the opportunity to get involved in designing and installing small continuous improvement projects. Breakdown cover can cover a wide range of production issues, from adjusting machine parameters to replacing bearings, motors, electrical components etc.
I've learnt lots of trade skills during my apprenticeship, most of which include the wide range of electrical skills required to complete my day to day work. I've also developed teamwork and communication skills from working alongside others in my department and also working with other departments in my workplace.
There is lots I enjoy about my programme, I particularly enjoy my time in university learning and in work during breakdowns where there I get to use a wide range of troubleshooting methods to determine the problem. I enjoy working with colleagues in my department. I would find more enjoyment if there were more opportunities to employ the skills I learn at university, such as with other small projects during work.
I feel there is a lot of appreciation within the immediate department and colleagues for the work I do at Premier Foods. I don't feel this is reflected by other departments however and there is little noticeable recognition by Premier Foods, coupled with a lack of incentives to go beyond the scope of your work.
I've had no issues with the organisation of my programme, the University have been supportive with tutor meetings each semester to discuss progress and wellness. I enjoy my programme and find my department is supportive. I would find it helpful if there was more information provided on end point assessments and what work is involved in them as I would like to prepare as much as I can in advance.
My training provider is very supportive, they've been quick to respond when I've needed help with any learning material and I've had regular meetings with my training provider mentor to check progress and wellness. I've found my time at University very helpful and an enjoyable experience.
I've got lots of support from my manager as my on-site mentor for any issues I may come across with training and have had no issues planning my training around by work because of this. Outside of my mentor I'm unsure of what support would be available to me from the company.
My salary is competitive and very good for the area, there is little travel costs as it's easily accessible by public transport and covers living costs whilst allowing me to save each month. The apprenticeship not incurring an additional cost to my living expenses makes it a great opportunity.
I'm unaware of any community events/activities/classes that have been organised by the company. There are however a lot of clubs around the area that offer a variety of classes: Gyms, Swimming, Football, Boxing. Because of this there are plenty of out of work opportunities you could take.
Yes
Premier Foods offers a competitive salary and the department I've worked within is very supportive and a pleasure to work with. It provides lots of opportunity for growth and learning and I personally feel I've developed a lot of my skills there, it has offered a great position to start my career from.
My main advice would be to read about the job you're applying for and what skills are required for it so you're prepared for what is expected in the interview, any experience you can get to support the skills required will help differentiate you from others also applying.
