Technical Apprentice working within the Antenna's Group as an Antenna Technician, measuring and testing antenna and processing results for engineering staff, simulation work and presenting to stakeholders. Worked on several different projects, most notably an advanced geolocation system and direction finding array.
Developed my theoretical background into a more practical skill set - working with new technology on a daily basis means you need to learn fast. I've attended internal and external training to facilitate this. I've learnt a lot about the engineering lifecycle and had major exposure to EW as a line of business.
I enjoy my work and the opportunities that it presents, including travelling with the company and meeting the end users of our products. The culture at Leonardo is well suited to my style of working and it has both met and exceeded my expectation as a company to work for.
Given that the company are fully sponsoring my degree, something that I did have to push for, I do feel valued and that I am adding value with the work that I complete. I've not be specifically recognised internally but I will be re-applying to apprentice of the year this year.
The programme is fairly structured, with the standard induction, training, college and work placements being offered - although I have broken that structure slightly which is presenting some challenges to the HR manager in charge of the course.
Support is available, I'm sure, although I can't say I've ever used it. The company as a whole is very good addressing any concerns that employees have, and managers adopt this policy too.
The company as a whole is very good addressing any concerns that employees have, and managers adopt this policy too. I would like a Mentor but this is not something that is regularly explored here, I have been able to seek advise independently of the scheme when needed.
Personally, although the pay is very good compared to other apprentice providers - I do feel there should be some recognition of individuals commitment and contribution to the company, and the fact that as a degree student I'm slowly becoming more qualified than my peers, however this is not something I see here. My costs are covered although a larger salary would have and impact on my ability to save and feel more grounded here with the company. Living in Luton or the surrounding area would prove very expensive and would not be possible on our wage, most apprentices will live at home throughout the scheme.
Many activities are organised although most are charity based - this is not a bad thing but attendance to out-side-of-work activities would be improved if the events were a little more diverse.
Yes
Leonardo looks like a good company to work for over the coming years, and is at the forefront of its sector. I would recommend that the company explore the opening of more degree apprenticeship places - rather than employing school leavers who are not fit for the job or don't show the interest in the sector of some other apprentices.
Be prepared, there is nothing difficult about the interview, however there are lots of people applying so you need to demonstrate in that moment why you are better than everyone else. Even if you're not. I would have liked to have known that A Levels DO NOT fast track you, contrary to what I was led to believe. University is still an attractive route at that time. Good Luck.
