My job title is a Maintenance technician, I am currently in my first year of the apprenticeship meaning I attend college full time. At college I do various practical subjects for example Electrical installation or Milling etc as well as btec subjects such as materials. This means on a day to day basis I only usually communicate with people within my college. My responsibilities consist of handing my assignments in by the deadline and making sure they are at the required standard.
At school I studied electronics which I also work on at college meaning I believe I have developed on the knowledge I already had on it. I have also learnt many new skills as most of the subjects I do now I have not done before for example learning how to use machines such as lathes or milling machines.
I would say overall I enjoy my programme as it is new to what I have done before therefore is interesting, I also enjoy more practical work which is why I think it suits me. Working in a team also makes the programme more enjoyable as you can communicate with other people.
At the moment as I am only at college and not at plant working I do not feel particularly valued by my company as I am not yet benefiting them, however once I have finished my training and start to work at plant I will feel more valued as I will be getting involved in tasks/projects etc.
I would say my programme is well structured as for example I had a week induction at the company before I started at college meaning I got an idea about the company as well as I got to meet my manager and other employees. The support is needed if we are to need it with us having regular meetings with our manager to say any questions or problems we have.
My training provider being my college do offer support if we are struggling with any subjects which we would have to sort out through our tutor. However usually we would be able to ask the trainer in that particular subject if we need any help.
As I already said we have regular meetings with our manager meaning if we are to have any questions or problems we can say it to them then.
Due to the fact I am only 16 I do not have my own house or own a car meaning I do not have many expenses. To get to college and back I have to get four buses a day therefore I have a buss pass which the salary we have is more than enough to pay for. This therefore also gives me enough for living/social costs.
As I am aware of there are not any activities to attend out of work that I have been asked to, however we did go to an outward bound course called skern lodge before we started college as part of our training and induction.
Yes
I would recommend this apprenticeship to a friend as there are certain perks such as good pay, a car scheme and a good future within the company coming through as an apprentice.
On the interviews and assessment days try not to be nervous so you can show the employers your strengths and why they should take you on as an apprentice.
