I was tasked with produce, so my job essentially was to stock produce correctly and in chronological order (according to sell by date). At the end of the day I would then mark down any unsold fruits/vegetables for sale and that was the best way to reduce wastage, which is a great idea. This was pretty much the same task everyday and required communication from my manager occasionally if I was stuck on anything, most of the time shoppers would not ask me anything but if they did then I was happy to help.
I developed more responsibility as I was trusted to do produce with another member of the staff but they allowed me to get on with my job, which gave me a sense of pride and owner over the work I was doing - I was in control of how organised my work would be to an extent.
It was enjoyable, the team were very welcoming to me and helped me at any moment (especially in the beginning) where I was unsure. It exceeded my expectations, as I expected it to be a very monotonous job but it varied to a degree each day, keeping me on my feet and engaged.
Very valued, the manager showed care and appreciation for me and the fact that I was new to the job, the staff were welcoming to me and customers were not as scary as I first thought! Due to the nature of my job I didn't have much involvement in projects but I still felt at home.
Very structured, there is a clear hierarchy from top to bottom and the email system is very clear, I could easily access staff. I was communicated to professionally and my priorities were listed out clear for me to follow, which made me feel eased as I knew that my work was easy to follow.
A lot of support initially, I was told and shown what to do and as I got better and more confident, I was left to my own devices with the presumed trust of my manager. My co-worker who worked full time there helped out when I was unsure too, showing me how to work the scanning machine.
I never really asked for anything, so I cannot really comment on this, but I did receive regular HR emails about support and how to access support and what support there was which was reassuring. I generally just spoke to staff if I needed any help and that worked out completely fine for me.
I walked to Morrisons as I lived nearby, so that was not an issue. Pay was pretty good for the 9 months that I was there, as a result there were not any costs incurred so what I took home was what I had, which was great as it gave me money for social life and hobbies of mine.
There were company days and I got access to discounts from 3rd parties from Morrisons, when I worked it was Christmas so there was a Christmas themed party which I had attended and enjoyed, it give me a chance to see what other works felt about work as I got to relax and talk with them.
Yes
At least at the establishment I was at, it was welcoming and very manageable, I learnt a lot and felt that they wanted you to feel like you were learning. It's a great place that allows you to get a sense of what it's like working at a supermarket fundamentally and gives you valuable life skills.
Have a clear resume to hand in and always be prepared for a phone call for an interview. Don't bother trying too hard with a suit for an interview, show your intentions (Be clean of course!) and prepare for what questions may be thrown at you (Like practical questions)
