This work experience involved shadowing a urologist at heartlands hospital, Birmingham. I witnessed out patient clinics as well as theatre for urological day cases.
This gave me an understanding of the main urological problems faced by the elderly. I learnt more about working as a team and problem solving to reach a diagnosis.
This programme was very well organised with a range of different activities to experience. This breadth made it enjoyable.
All of the healthcare workers I came across in this placement were helpful to enable me to have a productive placement at the hospital.
The programmes was well organised with a timetable of the procedures I was expected to see during the week. It had schedules for outpatients clinics, theatres, ward rounds and MDT meetings.
The training provider funded my lunch during the placement. There was support in terms of making sure I was getting the right experience.
My employer was able to support me in terms of securing thus placement as it can be very competitive.
My only costs were the travel expenses which were not covered. However, lunch was provided and this cut the cost.
Hours outside the scheduled day were encouraged to see a variety of different procedures in the hospital. I manage to visit the orthopaedic theatre and was also taught how to conduct an Ecg on the ward.

This work experience placement taught me a lot about the pros and cons of following a medical career. It was realistic in terms of a typical working day and I have based this placement of deciding what subject to study at university.
Apply early as places for work experience in hospitals are very competitive. It helps knowing a doctor within the work place that you can directly submit your application to. Make the most of your placement by seeing procedures outside of your timetable that interest you.
