  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • During this role, I was assigned a mentor who taught me the ins and outs of working in retail. I was based in the changing rooms, interacting with staff and customers and making the customer's experience a pleasant one. I have gained exposure in providing good customer service and how to also deal with compalints.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt valuable customer service skills that I did not previously have. I have not worked in a retail setting previously so this placement gave me the opportunity to gain such experience, as well as skills in working the company technology and tools.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed it very much. I especially enjoyed working with customers and the general public, as well as making friendships with the staff. I believe the placement is challenging, but this has given me a good view about what it is I want to do in the future.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Marks & Spencer?
  • Marks and Spencer are a brilliant company to work for. Their treatment of staff is impeccable and they are well known for being a great company to be employed by. They appreciate the work I am doing and offer help whenever I needed it.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well organised in my opinion. The staff know who I was from the start, they knew what department I was on and what my job role included. I feel that this programme is very well organised and a lot of time goes into it.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive lots of support. The staff are always there to offer help whenever needed. If it ever looks like I am stuffing or unsure, there is always someone around to help. I was made aware of the members of staff I could talk to if I ever had an issue.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As previously stated, the employer offers a lot of support. I am aware of support networks the company offers and I feel the company and my managers would go out of their way to offer support as and when I needed it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The package is appropriate for the work I do, I believe. I am on the rate that I would expect for the job I do. I am aware that there is scope for progression in the company in the future if that is the route I wanted to go.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are social opportunities for the staff that I am aware of. These include things such as Christmas meals and socials.

  • Yes

  • I have felt supported in this placement throughout and I believe this is a brilliant company to work for. The company treat their staff very well and appreciate the work the staff do for Marks and Spencer's.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Marks & Spencer?
  • Take every opportunity to develop that you can. Make the most of the staff offering help and try to learn as much as you can about the store and customer service in the time you are with the company.
