  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As the role of a sales assistant I am responsible for making special moments for the customers whilst undertaking general retail responsibilities. These include working tills, filling shelves, presenting stock to high standards and answering customer queries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my general people skills by dealing with a wide range of customers and their differing needs. I have also addressed fundraising skills through the ongoing charity work that the company undertakes.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do generally enjoy my programme although at times I feel undermined/ not respected by long standing staff because I have not been there as long as them. I like to learn new skills and do get given the chance by some managers but not by all.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Marks & Spencer?
  • Whilst some managers make me feel like a valued member of staff, I generally don't feel valued by the company. I feel like I come and go with little notice and don't always get appreciated for working hard.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is fairly structured and well organised I have gotten to the point where I know exactly how things will run and what I will be doing before attending my shift.

  • My training provider is easily approachable and always available for queries. I can go them whenever necessary.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive support when I approach somebody for it if I feel that I need it. Other than that it is the general support you could expect for everybody.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My hourly wage is above NMW and is competitive with other retail employers. However the hours per week that I work just about cover my weekly outgoings and leave me with nothing for leisure or savings.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company allow charity days in which you can take a payed day to do something for charity. They also keep employees informed about internal vacancies and opportunities.

  • 9. Would you recommend Marks & Spencer to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company in general is good to work for with mostly kind and understanding employees. The pay is good.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Marks & Spencer?
  • Always keep your customers at heart and as your main priority. It is vital to the company that you can approach customers and satisfy them.
