I work as a technical operator for Bloomberg TV where I robotically control cameras, scroll the auto-cue for presenters and floor manage the studio. These jobs all contribute to the production of the TV shows.
I have learnt many technical skills such as motor skills using the robotic cameras and improving my confidence on taking responsible roles. I have improved my communication skills with my team and my organisation skills as I have to time manage very well.
I love my job. There isn't a day that I don't want to work.
Bloomberg have made me feel very valued as they have trusted me and given me responsibility to run the TV show. They have been patient whilst training me and believed in me that I would achieve my goals.
My apprenticeship within Bloomberg is very well organised as they gave me a realistic amount of time to achieve my set out targets.
My training provider - Step Forward - give me lot's of support in terms of work load and life outside work. Although the course work load is extremely heavy and there isn't much time to complete the work they take into consideration. They also have meetings with me and my boss to ensure that I'm coping with the course as well as feeling comfortable at work.
I receive a lot of support from my employer and from the rest of my working team. They are all there to help with coursework and often give me the benefit of doubt if I show any mistakes in my work. They're all very encouraging and make me feel a valued member of the team.
Bloomberg pay is much higher than most apprenticeships and considering I don't have any bills to pay, the money is a great way to save for my future.
As the industry that I work in is media, this year of work experience has heightened my chances of working as a freelancer for Bloomberg and many other TV studios. I've made many contacts and networked with the correct people and I feel confident that when my contract ends in September that I will be able to find decent work.
Yes
This is a great gap year before university as it allows young people to gain independence and responsibility of an "adult" life before living the student life. It allows them to save money for future investments and gives them a year to figure out if university is the right choice for them.
Understand that this is a professional environment and the rules are completely different to being in school. Actions have consequences and you must be willing to work hard, long hours which may be stressful. Having Bloomberg on your CV opens doors that university will never, so this is a unique opportunity not to be taken for granted.
