My role at BMW is to expand my knowledge and skills over a 4 year period. At the end of the 4 years of learning, I will become an Engineering technician. Furthermore, for the first year, we have one day dedicated to BETC. This Monday consists of the following lessons: Maths, Electronic Principles, Engineering Drawing, Health and Safety, Communications and finally PLCs. The rest of the week is in the workshop. The workshop consists of three areas. The first area is Electrical where apprentices learn how to wire circuits, solder and learn the concept of PLCs. The next part of the workshop is Machining. This consists of manually creating an object from hand and learning how to use lathes and Mills to construct a desired object. The last part of the workshop is Mechanical. This is where apprentices learn pneumatics, constructing and deconstructing objects to either find faults or replace components.
Just during my first year as an apprentice at BMW, not only has my confidence improved, but I have learnt so many skills at the same time, skills that I could not learn at school. Some of the skills that have been improve are things like my Team work, my ability to work under pressure , my leadership skills and finally my problem solving skills.
I really enjoy the programme as it has a great balance of theory and practical learning.
I fell very valued at BMW. This is due to the fact that all staff treat apprentices with respect.
The apprenticeship program is very well structured. This is because we have rotations in the workshop. This is designed to give us a wide range of skills that are learnt and then can be applied to problems that can occur in the Plant. It’s the background knowledge that will help us first year apprentices in the workplace in our further years as an apprentice.
Our training provider offers support sessions twice a week. These are targeted at people who are struggling at Maths. I feel that the training provider is keen to help us through the apprentership.
My employer offers a massive amount of support. Every Wednesday we are reminded that if we have any problems whatsoever, we can come and speak to them and they can support us. Apprentices also have reviews where they have a 1 to 1 with their managers to talk about how they are finding the course at that time and feel if they need to talk about a problem or not. I believe that I BMW offers the most support they can offer and that is area cannot be improved.
My salary is very generous for someone who is 17. Comparing this to my costs a great feeling as my costs is nowhere near my salary.
There are opportunities that are offered to do outside of work.
Yes
I would recommend BMW group to a friend. This is because in my first year as an apprentice at BMW, my confident and ability to work under pressure has improved. Moreover, BMW offers more improvements on my leadership skills and my problem solving skills. The great thing about this course is that it offers a scheme car as well as getting payed to learn!
I would say that the BMW Apprenticeship attracts high numbers of applicants. This means that your application needs to stand out from the others. Before submitting an application, you need to ensure that you re-read your application, see if it applies to the job you are applying for and that it consists of no spelling mistakes.
