I am a Highways Technician apprentice on a 2 year 3 month scheme in which I have seen a large variety of the works going on in TFL surface transport my scheme involves 4 6 month placements around the business so day to day activities mainly consist of help and carrying out work within whichever team you are placed with so daily activities vary but right now I am working with the bus infrastructure team and carrying out designs and reviews of designs and attending site visits to see the progress on site and assess the works to make sure they're sticking to the design
During my time on the apprenticeship I have earn a level 3 Btec in civil engineering and a level 3 NVQ in management. during my time within the company I have also learned a massive number of skills ranging from presentation skills and public speaking to asbestos management and best practice within construction
I have enjoyed every aspect of the apprenticeship since joining the teams ive worked with and the other apprentices ive got to known and work with have all been a pleasure and the company its self has amazing in dealing with any problems ive had during my time working for TFL I can say it definitely surpassed my expectations
I defiantly feel valued within TFL for a company so large to be able to show recognition for people that go above and beyond and constantly review personal progress to ensure that people are striving to be better I believe TFL values the work I do
at times I would say that aspects of the programme where left to the last minute but that overall it didn't affect me in a negative way but could be looked at and improved
from the NVQ side of training I can say that QA our training provider did an outstanding job on the part of helping us with our work and supporting us however on the Btec side I believe the college we attended could use a lot of improvement the city of Westminster college in my opinion took a very lazy approach to our course in terms of support, guidance and general attitude.
overall no complaints with the support I was given
the salary/package is very generous and has helped greatly since we are provide a free travel card it cuts costs significantly
there are always external opportunities for people to follow
Yes
I believe it is a great gateway into the working world and has given me a head start compared to many of my peers my age
express that you are looking to learn in your apprenticeship as that's the main reason it exists to help people learn skills that will help them in life.
