I am on a scheme which is comprised of 5 x 1 year long placements, with placements across different divisions of the business. These roles are all project control and project management based, with a large part of the day spent talking to a wide variety of different stakeholders and pulling together information.
The apprenticeship offers an honours degree after 5 years of part time study, and there are also many opportunities for internal training both role specific and for personal development. Communication and teamwork skills are essential across all of the roles that you may be placed within, as well as a level of IT literacy.
The programme as a whole is an enjoyable experience - a lot is dependent on the team you are working within however you never spend more than 12 months in one placement. The company culture is generally positive, with the vast majority of people willing to assist apprentices and graduates learn the ropes.
BAE Systems places a large emphasis on the training and development of its' apprentice and graduate population, and there are many opportunities available to people on early careers schemes. The work that you do on your placements is identical in difficulty and relevance to the work that full time members of staff are doing, so in effect you are treated as any other employee in this respect.
The programme is quite well organised, with one day a week assigned as a college day. The remaining four days are spent in the workplace. There is an induction programme which contains all of the essential information and training that is applicable to new starters. A mentoring system is in place to whoever wants to make use of it, offering support and assistance to early careers students.
The college are generally helpful, offering support and advice to students with relation to their work. The work is challenging and the college acknowledge that. Time is provided within college to complete studying - it is not expected that all of the studying is done in your own time alongside what is in effect a full time job.
BAE Systems are well versed in their apprenticeship programmes and as such there is a wide support network available to apprentices and graduates. Managers are generally very accommodating towards apprentices, respecting their need to attend college weekly and complete assigned work. Mentors are available, as are a dedicated HR team where required.
The salary is high considering the area where the business is based (NW England). Living costs are relatively low, so there is plenty of money left to enjoy yourself on regular nights out and social events with other apprentices. Sites are located within easy reach of most places in the North West, with good road links.
This is dependent on how proactive the individual is - for those who are willing to volunteer and put the time in there are plenty of opportunities for personal development activities such as attending conferences, hosting school visits and supporting local community activities. There are plenty of activities available in the local area, with many towns and cities within easy reach.
Yes
Lots of opportunities for progression, a good salary, a well versed apprenticeship programme, lots of other apprentices within the business, a wide variety of roles to choose from, good location, friendly and helpful staff, opportunities to travel overseas should you desire
Application process can be lengthy, consists of an assessment centre if you get through the early rounds. Be yourself, don't lie on your application as you will be found out. If you're lucky enough to get a place, don't be afraid to ask questions and take any development opportunities that come your way.
