I am required to help with the design of the equipment within Location cases on the railway. This involves gathering a wide range of knowledge as there are many different aspects to this design.
I have learnt a lot to do with using computer aided design software as well as different skills involved with working on the equipment that has been installed or is due to be installed on the railway.
I find the programme enjoyable as we are always being encouraged to learn more and try to further ourselves. The programme feels as though its aim is to further our skills and knowledge in order to help us be successful within this job.
As we progress through the apprenticeship we are given more responsibility which makes me feel like the work I am doing is valued and I am also valued as part of the team.
At times the programme could be a little better organized as there are parts of the apprenticeship where I feel like we could use more assistance and help with understanding some roles.
The training provider is always willing to send us on any training courses that will be beneficial to our development and occasionally reaches out via email to see how everyone is getting on and if we have any problems we can discuss this with them.
If we have any problems or we are struggling then we are encouraged to ask someone we are working for or with for help with the understanding of what we are doing. There is always someone who is willing to help you learn and progress.
As an apprentice the salary is not too bad and can certainly cover costs of living while working through the programme. However it was said to us by managers when we started that we would go up in small increments every year of the apprenticeship which then ended up not happening and we weren't told of any changes until the time for this to happen came around.
The company is happy to put you through college and/or university in order to further your qualifications and help you further your career within the firm. They also offer lots of volunteering roles outwith the workplace.
