I am training to be a maintenance techincian and daily i doing a variety of different training aspects from technical drawing to maintaining mechanics devices, where we stripped down a points machine a put it back together. As a future nuclear professional the training is carried out in a way where we can develop the qualities we need to work on a nuclear power station, for example having our own accommodation which will help us become more responsible as well as going on different work trips to help make us a more well rounded person. In addition to this we also have carried out a project of our choice where have to design a product and how to make it, this also involved finding the materials the prices etc, this helped our communication skills as we had to contact different companies for information.
I feel like my skills have developed throughout the process from life skills, due to this life skills lesson we are given and the trips, too hands on skills which will help me later on in my job. The development of our skills is helped by having to work with different people form the start of our apprenticeship and been given the independence from our first day
I really enjoy the program as i find the work is at the correct level as well as being fun to carry out, not only this but the company help us organise trips away in our own time to places like London and Thorpe park, this helps all the apprentices to bond and have a more enjoyable time. As well as this all the facilities and clubs in our accommodation helps, like the gym, football and squash courts, car club, the band etc
I feel very valued at EDF because senior members of the company are coming to out learning base to give us presentations and we are told that the we are valued employers and are the future of EDF
The program is very organised and structured as we have a timetable set out for the year so we know what subjects we have coming up and the timetable for the week with every class and what room we should be in is displayed on the wall
I receive a lot of support as we have residential officers where we live which are always there if we need help with anything or have any problems, as well as the nurse who we can go too with any problems
Every 12 weeks we receive a report on how we have done the past 12 weeks form the different instructors we have had and how we can improve, as well as this we also have meetings with our co-ordinator to talk about how the program is going and if we have any problems
I feel like the salary is very good as all of our food and accommodation is paid for so the money we get is for our enjoyments and when the company organise trips for us we get them for a very cheap price
There are a lot of oppurtunities outside of work, EDF are always finding new activities we can take part in form sports, like the football team and squash league, to more academic aspects like joining imeche and going to open days
Yes
because i have really enjoyed my time so far and it has made me want to work for EDF Energy for as long as i can
My main tip would be to be yourself when going through the process but also trying as hard as you can to impress your employers
