My day to day tasks included, helping customers to locate products, working at the till, putting out stock on the shelves, getting rid of expired stock on the shelves and also assisting the managers with any jobs that they would like help with. I was mainly working in the retail department so I didn’t get to work with any chemicals and what not.
I learnt lots of skills, I learnt to talk to customers in a talk and concise way which helped my confidence. Also by working on my own on most tasks I learnt to be independent and also not to be scared to ask for help when I needed it. I also did a bit of group work to improve my group skills.
I enjoyed the programme as I learnt a vast amount of new skills and meet new people who were very interesting however when I applied I thought I’d be learning a lot more of the chemistry side rather than the retail as I want to be a chemist later in my life however this was not the case and I was left a little disappointed sadly.
I felt very valued by them, they always took my opinions to account and never left me out of group meeting in the mornings so that I didn’t feel left out. They also constantly praised me for my hard work and determination of what I was doing and this helped me feel even more valued. They also gave my several gift cards for my hard work.
The programme was well structured as the empluerbalways had a new variety of tasks everyday for me to do but I felt that they didn’t vary enough for me to feel like I was doing something new everyday. Most days I felt that I was doing the same thing again and again however this may just be what working at Boots is like
I received plenty of support when I needed it from my supervisor and they were willing to give me any support when explaining what I’d be doing for the day and how to do any new tasks that I was given. However they could have given me more clear instructions when explaining the tasks as I often had to figure some tasks out on my own.
I received lots of support from my employer when I asked for it, I did not need help that often though as the jobs were very well explained by the training provider and were easy. The employer and the other employees however did try to help me even when i didn’t ask and they saw me struggling.
I was not paid for my work as I was only in secondary school when I did it, however they did give me lots of gift cards along the way as a thank you for the hard work I did which I thought was really good. I do wish they paid me however as they essentially got work for free for the time I was there.
There were plenty of opportunities outside of work for me to do, they often has several chemistry and medicine related work at different university’s for me to attend. They also had several opportunities to go to there other branches and see how thy operate which was very interesting and eventful. So this was a great aspect of the work experience.
Yes
They were a kind and helpful company who helped me learn lots of skills for the future and also build my confidence for the future. They also gave me a great reference to put on my future CV’s and applications which is very good and helped me to get into college.
I would advice them to think carefully before applying as they only let you do the retail side of the business and not the chemistry part. Also make sure that you take the most out of the opportunities outside of the work expierence as they might me more relevant to school and college work than the work expierence it’s self.
