My job at M & S involved being a supervisor of the food court staff at the front of the store. Daily tasks would involve planning the structure of the day in terms of how the staff would operate (stock checks, till service). From time to time i would coordinate the staff directly during my shifts or organise patterns with the managers. Other responsibilities I had were ensuring the store closed on time without anyone running over hours and maintenance of the self service tills. As part of the course, projects involved a case study on how far customers had travelled to visit our local store each day.
I have learnt more about the roles of staff within retail as well as the core responsibilities of managerial staff in a store environment.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the work ethic and store staff engagement with regards to team tasks. I have developed my own skills of working in a team as well as learning more about the retail work environment.
They treat their staff extremely well, managerial staff offer praise and also one-to-one engagement on a monthly basis which improves morale.
The programme offers extra activities and responsibilities which I gain a lot from during the day to day work. Task organisation and delegation is the focus of the programme.
The support staff are sometimes busy with other tasks within the store. I feel that this could be improved if they were more readily available to me.
The managerial staff always were around if i needed their help. I also had the other staff members on standby for me if I needed any extra support during my time there.
Commute and living costs are reasonable, staff discount is offered also.
Team building events and social activities are common amongst the staff, which really helped me to find fun company activities during my spare time. Some staff shared my sports interests which helped also.
Yes
The culture and friendliness of all staff is a reflection of the quality of work there in their stores.
Be modest about your skills and don't be afraid to speak honestly about your interests with regards to responsibilities.
