  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working at Barclays I had several jobs on a day to basis, I had to assist customers sometimes when I was working on the ground floor however I was usually helping my employee to do some paperwork most of the time and also helping them with several different accounts and also filling in documents on a computer that they wanted me to do. They also gave me several different tasks where I had to watch my employee fill in certain documents so that if I pursue a career in banking I’d know how to fill them in.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt a vast variety of skills, I learnt to ask for help when I needed it and not shy away from doing so. I also learnt to work independently as I was filling in most paperwork on my own with little help. However at the same time I was working as part of small groups with other people doing the work expierence so this helped me to build my team working skills. I also had to be the leader of my group several times so this helped my management skills as well. Also punctuality was another skill that I gained as I had to be there at a certain time every day.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed the programme, I always wanted to go into banking and so learning what it was like to work as part of a major banking organisation was great as it reaffirmed my decision to go into this career. Further I enjoyed that it was something different to college which is very much the same every day, working at Barclays was different almost every day so I really enjoyed the variety.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Barclays?
  • I felt very valued by Barclays, my employer said that I was a great and hard worker. They never treated my differently just because I was younger and not a proper employee. Also the employers gave my a very good reference for my future CV’s and personal statements for University so this was a great way to show that they valued me aswell.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was well structured with several different things for me to do on a day to day basis. I never felt that I was doing the same thing over and over again as I often felt at other work experiences so this structure was by far the most varied and enjoyable to date. Also my employer also told me every morning what’s I was to do that day generally so this also added structure as I knew what I was doing the whole day.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received lots of support from my training provider as it was there job to teach me how to use several of the programmes I was using on the computers. They also taught me how to get around the quote large building and how to use my access card and pin. Also they taught me how to fill in paperwork that I was new to and also helped me with any other tasks that I may have needed help with.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer was not really there to support me, this was mainly done by the training provider. The employer only told me what to do on a day to basis and were there to look ever me and make sure that I wasn’t doing anything that I wasn’t meant to be doing. The employer did however on some occasions give me assistance as to what ai need to do if I needed the help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I was not paid for my work experience as it was only for a short period of time and it wasn’t really meant to be a job only meant to tell me what working was like and whether I’d enjoy working in this career in the future. They did however give me some money for lunch everyday and also some vouchers for several shops as a thank you for my hard work during the work expierence.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There went many opportunities outside of work which was disappointing however it was totally understandable as you can’t really host many baking related opportunities outside of the bank as there isn’t that much to do. I wish they’d hosted talks and lectures about what going into banking is like however so that I could have learnt more.

  • 9. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It was a very enjoyable experience where I learnt lots of new skills and also learnt what ai want to do in the future because of how much I enjoyed it. They staff were nice and friendly and they gave me lots of support and also the vouchers were a nice addition. I do wish there wer moreopperitnities outside of work however but other than that if you get ur chance you should definitely go and do it.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • I’d say that you should make the most out of your experience there and not be shy to ask for help or any questions. Also make sure that you fill in the documents right as even thoug they are moderated after you’ve done them you should seek to set a good impression.
