  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • 1 week work experience in financial services tax, in the EY Leeds office. My day-to-day role involved looking at a new law being introduced and how it impacts clients and how they can comply with the law. After researching the new law and interviewing managers and senior managers about their clients, I had to do a presentation at the end of the week regarding my findings and improvements that can be made going forward.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout the duration of the week, I have learnt many things. For instance, from the virtual learning sessions, I have learnt how to write in a business environment, how to newtork and build relationships, how to present effectively and how to be resilent in difficult situations. Additonally, through interaction with different colleagues from different levels, I have been able to develop my communication skills and my confidence as you get speak to managers and even partners as everybody is very approachable. Moreover, I have developed my business awareness as you are exposed to real clients and actual work that you would undertake if you worked in tax.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme was very enjoyable as I didn't expect to be given work that would be helpful for the team in order to win more clients. Additonally, the programme changed my perception of tax because before I thought it was quite boring but it's actually interesting and you get a fantastic team around you so you can easily build relationships with your colleagues. Moreover, you get given you own laptop to work from and in my case the laptop was brand new and it was touchscreen which was awesome.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • I feel extremly valued by EY as they gave me actual work which was going to be used to win clients. Additonally, I felt very appreciated as I got to give my own opinion on how EY can go about pursuing clients in the future which was very refreshing and I got to have a discussion with an exective director which I never imagined would happen.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was very well structured for the service line that you choose as you were able to learn about the service in depth. Additonally, you always had something to get on with during the week which shows how well organised the programme was. However, I think that the programme was too short and it should be at least two weeks as the week passes really quickly and it will allow you to gain more knowledge about the service line if the programme was longer.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The best thing about the whole programme is the support you get. You get assigned a counsellor and a buddy and you can ask them absolutely anything even if you think the question sounds stupid and they will always answer it for you. Additonally, if you don't understand anything they will explain it to you. Moreover, you can contact the student recruitment at anytime and you can approach anybody else in the office as everybody is very welcoming. In my opinion, the support you get is the best thing about the programme as everybody has been through the stage your going through so they are very happy to help you.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • For the work experience you get paid arond £5.50 an hour which easily covers your expenses as I travelled for an hour there and an hour back to the office each day and I still had money to spare. However, even if the programme didn't pay you the experience itself is worth it as you learn so much.Additonally, you might get taken out for lunch and EY will cover all the costs which is great.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Unfortunately as the programme was only one week it was difficult to see the opportunities outside of work. However, there are lots of social events that EY organises for its employees.

    7/10

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The support you get is incredible and EY is really committed to keeping employees happy. Additonally, you can develop really quickly as you know that you have great people around you who will always support you and aid you whenever you require assistance or when you don't understand something.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • The most important tip I would give is be yourself as EY don't have academic requirements so they are looking at your particular strenghts and how they can be applied in the role you are applying for. Additonally, make sure you practice numerical and verbal reasoning tests before you do the actually ones. If you don't understand something make sure you contact the recruitment team as they are always happy to help.
