I worked as an intern at EY for a period of three weeks. During these three weeks I took part in various workshops, such as CV and interview techniques, alongside some workshops hosted by the ICAEW and other internal departments. Furthermore, I took part in a business experience for a week in the Extended Assurance department where I took part in client meetings.
I learnt how to formally write emails and other business documents, and improved on my presentational skills, having done a number of presentations.
The programme was an invaluable insight into the corporate world, where I learnt what the what the working world expected of me, including working hours and expectations.
At the EY programme, I felt very respected and treated as an equal. I wasn't treated like a child or shunned for my lack of experience. Everyone was friendly and eager to teach me new things.
Overall the programme was well constructed and we were aware of what was in store for us. There was a very strong support network , not only from the various programme organizers, but also other members of EY who would go above and beyond to resolve any situation.
When completing our work, we received clear instructions in verbal form and on the board. We were given adequate time to complete the work, and did not feel rushed at all or pressured. At various points, our line managers would come along and check up on us.
Our line managers during the programme were very supportive and understanding of our situations. They were understanding of where we were coming from and took time to listen to our problems and worked with us to create a solution, if needed. We were given clear instructions and never felt pressured or lagging behind.
Yes, the salary was acceptable for the programme and covered food/travel costs.
Yes, we were assigned a mentor who we meet up with at least once a month and can ask for support and advice.
Yes
The programme was the perfect insight needed into the corporate world, as it is very difficult to gain an experience like it, especially given that I come from a deprived area. For my friends, and for myself, it would work as a strong motivational factor.
To have confidence and faith in their ability, and to not be shy with their questions or concerns.
