  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is "customer assistant", which in my case was being a cashier most of the time. Daily interactions are: operating the till, restocking, making sure that the shop is clean and tidy. I am also responsible for my shift. Usually I work in the mornings, so opening the shop is also included in my job list.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to deal with angry customers, how to operate the till, this job also helped me to improve my mathematical skills, because I am always dealing with numbers at work. My quick thinking has also improved, because I have to deal with problematic situations moderately. I had no prior courses on how to operate the till, everything was being taught on the spot.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my work, because I have morning shifts, so my evenings are free. The team changes from time to time, so it is pretty hard to make friends at your workplace. Nevertheless, all the people who come to work here are pretty friendly. The company and managers wants to make sure that we all get along. Everyone just does their job, so it's easier for all of us. The salary is also good.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Aldi?
  • I feel valued by Aldi in general, as we receive regular feedback from job managers and seniors as they want us to progress as well. Recognition is granted by spot bonuses, which is not something I have expected to be rewarded at my level but am pleased to say so. External recognition in this profession is not very good. Though, some clients remember your face and come to chit-chat during the scanning.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well organised as everyone has to make sure everything goes smoothly. Everything is set out on a plan and we know exactly what do we have to do and they keep us well informed if there is any change. The training system could be better, because you have to figure out some things by yourself and paper instructions won't help every time.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We do not receive a lot of support from our training provider. The other staff are really friendly though. They are helpful there and I feel like I learn a lot from them. Area managers are always there to answer questions if we are stuck which is always good especially on weekends when you might feel on the edge. Aldi recruitment page could be better.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Area Managers and older staff are very supportive if I have any work related issues. Job appraisals also allow me to raise any issues I may have. General attitude is friendly, because most of the managers were in our place once, so they understand our needs.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary package is pretty nice. A steady paycheck also helps me to stick to my spending plan and increase my feeling of financial well-being. Based on my point of view I feel that Aldi has a good salary package. Of course it also depends on your financial needs. For me personally, it was enough to cover my monthly needs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • No, there are not many opportunities outside of work. Since my job is that of a lower qualification, we are not invited to any company events (if there are any). Aldi also does not hold any classes or voluntary initiatives. That aside, we still have some activities between co-workers like going to pub after work etc.

  • 9. Would you recommend Aldi to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend people to work here, if you like repetitive work everyday. The salary is decent based on what you have to do daily, and the workload is not that big. Once you learn how to do everything it's going to be easy working at Aldi. The shifts might be a little out of order sometimes, but everything else is pretty neat.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aldi?
  • I think most importantly is to have a quick thinking and fast legs if you are considering to apply here. Always ask questions if you have any issues and show interest in shops general well-being. Confidence is also a key to success, if you want to go up the career ladder at Aldi. Overall, it's a pretty decent place to work. Maybe not your life goal, but a good step towards a bright future.
