Role was work experience at Keswick branch of Wetherspoons. This was my second job since leaving school. Role involved serving customers food, clearing plates/cutlery, serving customers at the bar, sweeping, mopping and general cleaning.
I've learnt quite a lot about myself, and view hospitality and customer service in a different light now. I've learnt about how to encourage customers to purchase certain products, how to serve customers, hygiene management, and also about people management. My team leader was OK, but he was very stressed out due to pressure from constant stream of customers and the demands of Wetherspoons HQ!
50/50. I enjoyed serving customers and talking to them. I enjoyed the camaraderie of working in a team and being under pressure. Had to deal with drunk and abusive customers which wasn't nice. Also prospects aren't great. Neither is the money.
I don't think they are a good employer to work for. Constant demands from HQ, staff turnover seems high. I believe it is relatively easy to get promoted, but I think long term prospects are better at McDonald's.
It was hit and miss. Most paperwork was completed during the early mornings when it was quiet. It seemed relatively structured and I was able to do everything I wanted to do.
Very little.
Employer was very supportive. Team leader was always stressed, but was as supportive.
Housing: not a chance. Keswick is a very pricy town, with one bed flats costing over £180k. Salaries at Wetherspoons are circa £7.50 an hour, with team leader making around an extra £1. Job would need to pay upwards of £13 p/h to meet costs.
Team were very sociable outside of work, and I enjoyed spending time with them. I spent a good chunk of my free time at the workplace with them.
Yes
Although not as disciplined as McDonald's, I enjoyed my time here. Wages aren't great, and work ethic is patchy, but team was great to work with. Wouldn't look at long term career here, unless they open branches in Oz or NZ.
Just go for it and give it a try.
