I am a team player in a flaming grill pub. On a day to day basis I serve customers at the tills take their food to their tables clear plates and reset and then close down the pub at the end of the night. Interacting with guests is a very important role in my daily life
I have developed so many new skills, for example I have learnt how to change barrels in the cellar, and also have been on 2 courses that helped me develop my bar and beer and cask knowledge. I have also learned to carry multiple plates and making desserts in the kitchen whilst doing potwash a couple of times a month
I rather enjoyed my prorgramme, I have an excellent trainer who was always very helpful as well as a DGM who was there it I needed help so felt like I had all the support I needed to compete my apprentiship. I found the questions sometimes a bit too simple, but I think this was due to me doing advanced level qualifications also I was expecting the answers to be harder, so that would be my only fault if that is one
I feel mildly valued by Greene king, I sometimes don't feel like I get as much benefits as other companies I know do. For example I am on the minimum wage and do not receive any tips, despite working quite a lot of the time doing the work that should be done by 2 people really. They also have a staff voucher but have stopped the friends and family one which means my family can't use it, which I find rather unfair. I have amazing managers, so my pub I feel very valued but by the company as a whole I don't. They also cut down labour a lot which means I lose full time hours and money
I found the program very structured, I liked how each category was clearly listed out to me at the beginning and was presented in workbooks that was easy to access and answer. I have a good amount of time in between each of my meetings with my trainer to complete the exercises. Meetings were always scheduled and kept
I received an amazing amount of support from my training provider. Right from the beginning I was told what to expect exactly what I would get out of the course. On our meetings I was always reassured I was doing well and on track. I didn't need that much help on my course but was always told if I needed help I could always ask for it and it was accessible
I received a lot of support from my employer especially my DGM. As she was doing apprentiships too she knew exactly what support I needed at times and was always patient when I asked for help or advice. I was encouraged to take on an apprentice by my employer and i believe it was a really good decision me doing so
I don't believe that my salary meets my costs very well at all. On an average month I earn less than a thousand pounds, with over two thirds of that having to go on my rent and tax and bills, and I am left living pay check to pay check. I work so hard for my money and I don't get nearly as much as I believe I should
There have been a few opportunities outside of work that I had done, with them just being additional knowledge courses I could undertake, to date I have done 2, one being bar experience which improved my overall service and beer and cask which improved my back of house knowledge and in the cellar
No
The only reason I wouldn't recommend greene king to a friend is their poor wages, and I believe that other company's would too offer the apprentiships and experiences I have undertaken. I enjoy working for my particular pub purely for the people I am with but I don't agree with how the company as whole cut down on labour so we have to work twice as hard for no additional bonuses like a pay rise or anything
The tips I would give to someone applying is to just be yourself and friendly towards everyone that you encounter in the interviewing stage as you will need to show how you will around the strangers you are serving. Having a well write CV is important more so over qualifications I would say as if something looks well presented it says a lot about your character.
