working as a shop assistant in tesco is an interesting and unique opportunity. i found that the job was incredibly varied; no two days seemed to be the same. some examples of the day to day activities include filling shelves, organising stock and assisting customers by answering questions they have or helping them find an item that they cannot find. i thoroughly enjoyed the diversity.
i developed many skills while on this placement. one skill that i believe i developed a lot was team work; a big corporation such as tesco can only run if every individual worker does their bit. i believe that it was rewarding to be a part of this process because being a part of a large team and playing off each others strengths is very exciting.
reflecting on my time spent working at tesco, i can say that it was a very enjoyable time of my life. the staff who worked with me were very supportive and friendly and i genuinely thought that i was part of a team. i believe that working has got me some valuable experience and it will be a great thing to talk about when applying for a job in the future.
i believe that the people at tesco really valued and appreciated the work i did for them throughout the duration of my programme. i was recognised for my hard work through praise and was formally thanked at the end of my programme. i felt that the people around me really appreciated eachother which made the placement fun to be a part of.
there was great structure to my programme. the first day was an induction which took place in the store. my supervisor made sure i understood the contents of the programme and that i would know where to go at all times. i knew which staff i needed to go to if i had any questions and knew roughly where i needed to be and what i needed to do at all times.
my supervisor was very helpful at the beginning of the programme ; they were incredibly friendly and supportive to me. they took a step back as the programme progressed but i feel like they chose the right moment to give me independence as i did not feel confused or abandoned. i believe that the enthusiasm of my supervisor was key to my success on this programme.
the employer didn't have much contact with me throughout my programme. however, on one occasion i did need to speak to them more directly and this was made possible. i was checked on occasionally to make sure i was okay but i do think that my employer could have had a more direct and active involvement in my placement.
i was given a travel expense bursary which covered my travel cost - since this was a work experience placement it was designed to be unpayed so i really felt that my employer went the extra mile in giving me a travel expense bursary as i did not expect to receive this.
i did not come across many opportunities outside work - therefore, i believe this is an aspect that could be improved for my programme. however, i did go to one company event which i found both interesting and beneficial; i just wish that there were a few more opportunities like this.
Yes
the programme was incredibly diverse and interesting - i think it is also a great thing to put on your cv or university application as it shows that you have work experience and that you are not just academic. i also could have not have asked for a better team of people to work with.
the interview for the placement is designed to see how adaptable you are and how well you work as a team - make sure to give ideas and involve yourself otherwise you may come across as too independent. for the programme itself, it is important to be as active as possible - after all you get out what you put in.
