  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title junior consultant and my daily tasks involve various project management activities such as updating trackers for my current project. I work within a team of 5 people who are more senior. On a day to day basis we have quick daily catch ups regarding the progress of the projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I'm studying for a qualification at the moment called AAT and after it I'll progress onto studying ACA . AAT is a pathway accountancy qualification. We have mandatory training for project management fundamentals and other trainings such as assertiveness training is not compulsory. Most of our training courses are internal. I have learned various skills such as report writing, networking skills and project management

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the work that I do although it can get a bit repetitive. My team is 5 people who treat with respect and they're nice to be around. I support the company values and culture. We have progress reviews which give clarity as to whether you are meeting expectations which I do according to my manager.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by KPMG?
  • I feel appreciated and I get praise from the management of my team. Internal and external recognition can be better - we don't get much recognition besides bonuses which everyone is entitled to anyway. You get involved with various projects but some are lengthy so you end up doing the same set of tasks for a long time.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We have a clear structure of how the years are planned out. We have a week induction where the structure is explained. We also get to know the plan of the training and the dates for that. We get support from the training provider as well as the mentors and managers. Team hierarchy is also explained in the induction week. It is well organised and has a good structure

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • There are only certain situations in which we are supposed to contact the training provider for instance if the internal mentors and managers are unable to help with the issue. Normally, when you do contact the training providers they're very helpful and go above and beyond with helping you with the issues. The general attitude is positive.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My managers and mentors are the main people for support provision. I never had contact with the HR team regarding my studies. Having an informal mentor helps raise personal and sensitive issues which is also important. General attitude is very positive and you're encouraged to come forward with your issues.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary does not meet my costs at all. Living in London on an apprentice salary is close to being unrealistic. Rents are high and cheaper rents required you to live far away and that increases the cost of travel. Everyone at KPMG earns a lot more so it makes me feel uncomfortable at times.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • there are various opportunities outside of work that anyone can involved in and we are encouraged by our managers to do so. We have regular company events, networking drinks and dinners. We do some volunteering in schools as a team in order to try and help local communities here in east London.

  • 9. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend working at KPMG as it's a great name to have on your CV and people generally have positive associations with the name. It also provides a lot of training so you gain a lot of knowledge and expertise. It is also good to get to know how the corporate world works and how to communicate with people in a professional manner.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
  • The application process is rather lengthy and changes slightly every year. Make sure you don't have any typos in your CV and cover letter as that would eliminate you at the early stages. The key to a successful interview is to try and not come across as not nervous. The on boarding process is smooth and easy - there is a person who you can ask any question.
