In my current role my day to day role includes taking on various tasks from the team these are usually admin based however now that I have been in the team longer I receive bigger tasks that I actually feel are important and valued by the team , as well as participating in 360 events such as training, forums, forums projects ect.
I have gained new skills such as being able to work tax systems and understanding tax terminology. These are important in my current role but will also help me in other rotations as part of the 360 programme. I have developed skills such as organisation and communication. This has come from having to organise my outlook and taking part in meetings with people from other KPMG offices and clients.
I am starting to enjoy the programme now that I have got into it and know what I'm doing. However at the start of the programme I found it stressful because information was given to us with short notice which made me feels anxious. I now like coming to work everyday and working towards my qualifications.
To a certain extent, my team value me and provide me with work, they treat me as an individual and invite me to team events . However when we attend large apprenticeship events it sometimes feels as if they treat and one group rather than individuals. For example they don't know our names or what we do. We get asked questions by staff that make me feel as if they don't really fully understand the programme.
I found that before I joined KPMG was very disorganised. I didn't know where I had to be until a few weeks before which made be feel anxious. This is still the case now. When I was given assessment centre I found out on the Friday that I would need to go to Bristol on the Monday. this made me feel stressed and disadvantaged. Now that I am in the firm it's getting better however especially with 360 events things are left till the last minute.
BBP have been extremely helpful in the time before exams. They helped to reduce stress and make me feel like they cared. They emailed me on a regular basis to check everything was going well and over additional support. The actual tuition was not very good , there were far too many of us in one classroom and I couldn't ask the questions I needed.
My performance manager has contacted me once to have a call in the three months I have been here. I appreciate that they are busy however on our call she didn't even know my placement , which made me feel like an apprentice at KPMG not an individual. Simple things such as knowing my placement would make me feel as if they cared a bit more and had taken the time to do a little bit of research before the call.
I currently live at home with my parents , so the salary does cover my costs however if I wanted to move closer to the office I wouldn't be able to. It would cost too much to even rent a room and I wouldn't have enough money to live. I know a lot of other apprentices complain about how much money they need to live in an area that is close enough to the office.
Regarding my team we often go out for food after work and do stuff together. As a group of all the apprentices in the up Bristol office we have socials that allow us to meet and get together this is a good time to discuss how all our placements are going. As a year group of apprentices we meet and forums and with our individual offices we try to go to lunch everyday so that we can catch up with everyone and hear about there placements.
Yes
because it is one of the big four and allows for you to achieve professional qualification whilst gaining valuable work experience. you still have the choice to move away from home and meet new people. The one advantage is that you don't have to get in debt and have a wage coming in that allows you to save for the future.
When applying for KPMG take you time at each stage and remember to focus on the KPMG values. These are very important to KPMG and they like to see that you are able to meet there needs with things that you have already done such as extra activities. also to read up about the company know the areas that it has and what's important to KPMG such as the environment and volunteering.
