I’m an apprentice heating engineer which involves installing heating into commercial buildings. On day to day basis I’d normally be installing heating pipeowork in the building or installing heat emitters or working in the plant room of the building.
I’ve learned loads of new skills as I had no previous experience of my current job role before I got this apprenticeship. I’ve also developed existing skills such as leadership and team work.
I really enjoy my job and like being in site and getting jobs to do by myself. I also enjoy my college as the college sets a high standard and teaches students these high standards they expect that reflect on our work on site.
I feel very valued in SSE. My apprentice coordinator is always in contact with me asking how things are and if he could do anything to help. I also feel there is lots of opportunities within SSE to “climb the tree”.
The programme is very well structured with the college setting a high standard and at the beginning of each year telling us exactly what will happen and what they expect from us.
I receive lots of support. Nothing is a problem for them. I’m constantly in contact with them asking how I’m getting on and if I need anything.

My salary is okay but I’m in the 3rd year and I can’t afford to move out of my parents house as I have bills, digs and a car to pay for etc. I also haven’t had work near my house yet and I’ve been traveling between 80-140 miles a day just to get to work, it means I spend on average £500 a month on fuel and sometimes more if my car needs work done I’m it.
I believe after my apprenticeship it would be easy for me to walk into another job with my qualifications I have gained. However I believe my job is safe at SSE once I qualify.
Yes
Good apprenticeship and the rewards you get with the company are great.
SSE are currently struggling for work as are a lot of companies, so maybe look at companies that have lots of work. However it’s a good company with great reward schemes for employees.
