  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an apprentice electrician in my third year. My daily tasks range from putting up various wiring systems to testing and inspecting full installations. I can also wire new builds and refurbishments along with common fixes of lights and sockets. Daily interactions include my co workers, this is normally the same team or person for a duration of a job. External interactions can depend on the job however can be the general public, sub contractors and customers. I am responsible for my own safety and that of others around me when to make we all get home safe at the end of the day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my work because everyday can be different whether its a new job or travelling to a new place. I have been lucky to be put with people who can share their experience and skills with me as I develop through my training. The company I work for is very safety driven which is good to be apart of baecause it limits the possible dangers of day to day work.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by SSE?
  • I feel I get a lot of internal recognition from SSE because I am a female in a male dominated job. I have done a few interviews for SSE and external companies such as skills development scotland. I was also asked to attened a comfrence in the Glasgow depot last year to help promote women in the trade industry. I feel valued by the company as I've been asked to work away on job a few times throughout my apprenticeship.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The week induction I attented I met lots of people and learnt lots of things about the company i was moving into. My first year of training I found difficult having had no background of the job and the stresses of being the only female in my year. The mentor system SSE has in place means I get a review every six months or so and when I was at college I got reviews more from lecturers as well. I have had experience on many jobs through my apprenticeship and feel I've had a wide range of work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My previous training provider helped me through issues that were had early on in my apprenticeship. Guidance was given to me to help with my studies and coursework. I now have a new training provider who is interested in the progression of my skills and work experience.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have recieved lots of support from my employer as I requested a tranfer early on in the apprenticeship and got help from both my old and new managers through the transfer. I recieved lots of help and reassurance when I moved to the new branch and settled in very quickly with the help from my employer with regular meeting to make sure I was getting on well.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • With regular salary increases throughout the apprenticeship I have been able to afford accomidation for myself away from my parents. I have enough money to treat myself and others and continue to save on the side. After my transfer I found it easier to accomidate myself as I both work and go to college in the same city.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • With my working hours and holiday intitlements I have plenty time for a social life to see friends, take part in clubs and visit family. I take part in a dnace weekly and enjoy spending time with my partner and close family who live near by. Again because of my tranfer it has made it easier to do all these things as I am in one place all the time.

  • 9. Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Safety is its number one priority which is helpful for a secure working enviroment. There are multiple oppertunties for during your training and after. You get to meet lots of inspiring people and learn new skills constantly.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
  • When applying for SSE and during the interview stage be motivated and keen to learn and be enthusiastic. SSE can offer employability programmes prior to appliction which i would reccomend as this is what I did. Take every day as a new day when learning, it might seem difficult to start with but it will get easier. Don't think getting things wrong is bad take it as a learning curve.
