I am training to become a materials technician. Day to day I perform a bunch of different tasks including, issuing parts, returning parts, booking in spares, quality checking spares and stock checks. I work with a team of fourteen people within supply chain, we meet once a month for a meeting involving updates within Hinkley Point B.
I am working towards a NVQ Level 2 Qualification in Warehouse Management and then onto a Level 3 Qualification. I have improved pre-existing skills such as quality checking. I have gained lots of new skills within this role. I’ve learnt to use AMS effectively, keep on top of tasks, effectively check items for defaults and gained tones of confidence working in a different environment.
I really enjoy my job as a materials technician. The team I work with are great! The job itself isn’t too hard when you get the hang of it, now we have our AMS access it makes the job a lot more engaging. The job hasn’t lived up to what I thought it would include. I believed it would be more business and admin based, but when you work up supply chain it does become those things.
I do feel valued within EDF. My team gives me a lot of recognition to my manager, my manager will then tell me what I have or haven’t done. I am involved within every task my team carries out if I want to be and if I feel confident enough. I feel fully included.
My training isn’t very structured. I understand that this is because my team have never taken on a Supply Chain Apprentice. There wasn’t a lot of structure to my college course in particular. My training I’ve had within my team I cannot fault as I have learnt a lot in such a short space of time.
I have loads of support from within my team and I feel like my team are more than willing to help me if I want/need it. I haven’t asked my college for help yet as I haven’t needed to so I cannot comment on that. If I have a problem I always learn how to solve It from the help of my team.
I don’t see my manager that often but I know if I wanted to have a meeting o went to them directly I would get the help I needed. I believe that they would be more than happy to help me. My mentor gives me a lot of help and coaching about work.
My wages I believe are fair for an apprenticeship wage. For the costs of travel, living and being social I believe I have enough money to cover those costs. My overtime pay if very fair and I do not mind working overtimes at all. The location isn’t too far for home either.
I haven’t really got involved or heard about many events outside of work. But I haven’t been looking for opportunities outside of work. When I am not working I am 9 times out of 10 busy either at the gym or going out seeing my friends so I don’t have much time to spare to do other activates.
Yes
EDF has given my so many opportunities that I wouldn’t be able to get at my age anywhere else. Everyone here I enjoy working with, I enjoy coming to work every day which isn’t always easy. Also I believe you can further your career drastically with hard work within this company. I support what the company stands for as well.
The advice I would give is to take your time on the application making sure everything is spell checked etc. I would say to be patient waiting for a response for your application as it does take a while. In the interview I would recommend really just being honest and yourself because that goes a long way.
