Job Title: Quantity Surveying Apprentice Daily Tasks: Contract Admin, Procurement, Tendering, Subcontract Management, Value management. Daily tasks often vary depending on project type and project location. Currently working with BAMN on the Leeds FAS scheme involving flood defences for a 1:75 year event. Currently charged with the responsibility of tying loose ends and settling accounts. Lots of opportunity for responsibility on the project.
Other then achieving a recognised qualification in the construction industry, I have developed skills in communication, time management and been able to focus on my own professional development which is encouraged by BAMN.
I thoroughly enjoy the project I am on and the course set up is extremely ideal. Having 4/6 months on site with 2 month blocks at college allows you to change mindset based on work requirement. The college work is easily achievable within the time frames set out as is the on site NVQ work.
The onsite team although not directly responsible for apprentices put in lots of hours to provide work for apprentices and assist in their career development and understanding the systems for BAMN. The commercial team have offered me lots of opportunities and given me great responsibilities to undertake while working on site.
The programme is well structured with sufficient time allotted for coursework and on site work to be completed.
Support from training providers is ever present. The team are required to cater for up to 100 apprentices which is a high workload for the apprenticeship team. Patience is sometimes required but help can be found among the site team when on placement.
BAMN as an employer have been extremely supportive of my development within the company and civil engineering industry. For someone such as myself starting out in a new industry, often starting work can be extremely daunting. BAMN offer support in many different aspects such as accommodation or educational support and personal support that may be required.
As ann apprentice salary is usually low. Within BAMN, the salary is considerable generous as apprenticeship wages go. In addition to this, expenses can be claimed for commuter mileage at a reasonable rate.
Outside of work there are company events that are sometimes arranged, particularly when completing a project successfully. Always a way you can integrate into the company.
Yes
BAMN has provided me with a sense of belonging in my chosen career path. As someone who wasn't sure what they wanted to do as a career i have found a career i would like to pursue within the BAM group. BAMN run a strong apprenticeship and are always asking on how to improve their course.
Be Honest, be eager and do your preparation. BAMN look for apprentices that will be committed. Show BAMN that you are what they should be looking for.
