  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Market testing for rates for cost plans, inputting contractors returns into the system in order to compare contractors and to allocate works. Benchmarking historical data in order to have a database for internal estimates and tasks. Collating contract documents, preparing payment certificates and valuations. Overseeing contractors works. Engaging with Client to review budgets, estimates and forecasts.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since leaving soon, 100%. I have developed new skills after moving onto site in terms of completing valuations and dealing with new people directly on site. I have also developed communication skills so I am able to get tasks done efficiently. I have developed my confidence entirely and have progressed successfully into the 3rd year of university.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have settled into each of my teams with ease, feeling like I have been part of them of ages. They have helped with my transition and development over the past 2 and a half years. I enjoy the work, mainly being in contact with sub contractors and having my own responsibilities to deal with.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Mace?
  • I feel valued by my team and with the people I work with from day-to-day. I have been involved with tasks and projects, particularly when on site. I know that I am valued due to the support I have been given throughout the programme. Any issues we have had with university has been brought to the universities attention.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Our training and day release to university are well organised - some issues with university are out of Mace's hands. We have catch ups every so often which are fairly helpful. Task delegation is good but, as with anything, some chasing is necessary. Overall the organisation is fairly standard with such a big group.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have never been given the option to have a session with a Tutor or an adviser at university which would be beneficial to improve. There doesn't seem to be much effort in terms of the university supporting us as individuals and you and see a divide between full and part time students. I enjoy some lectures but others are not worthy of our time due to teaching standards.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • General attitude towards supporting apprentices is great - if there are any issues we know who to go to in order to get help. In my experience my team has been very helpful and line managers have been happy to have one to ones with me to go over my portfolio and progress and to help in any areas I have been struggling in.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary covers my costs of living though I feel I will struggle slightly when I move from home and am travelling further to get into work. I am able to pay rent and live on my wage through budgeting and am able to save money each month as well.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Mace encourage employees to partake in a volunteering day each year to help and give back to the local community. Mace offer discounts to local gyms and sports clubs in the Moorgate area. Communication sessions happen twice a year for the whole company and quarterly for employees that work in head office.

  • 9. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Mace is renowned for their graduate and apprentice programmes, encouraging school leavers to start a career in construction. The support base is great and all of my managers want me to succeed and develop in my career. The apprentice programme is open to everyone who has the required grades from GCSE and A-Level or the equivalent.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Be truthful on the application form and include everything and anything you have achieved. In the interview, be yourself and again, be honest. The assessment days are there to see your team working skills and how you interact with people. Be honest and confident with what you would like to achieve and show interest in opportunities you would like to take where Mace may be able to help you.
