My current role is an Assistant Estimator for Expanded, part of the Laing O'Rourke Group which specializes in RC Frames & Structures. My role is to prices/estimate the cost of the project at tender stage in first principles (Labour, Plant, Materials & other).
I'm currently studying for BSc Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management degree. Working in the industry whilst studying has given me first hand knowledge of problems faced in the industry and potential solutions to over come these which has aided my university assignments. Working within the industry has also developed my professional working manor.
Not only do I develop my skills at my projects and university but through the course of my program there are numerous modules that aid in my development.
I feel as though I am constantly supported when it comes to work load/ university load. In addition to this I have been push out of my comfort zone of assisting in a tender to leading it and the responsibilities that come with that. Within my team and by my manager it makes me feel trusted and supported of any decision I make, even if its the wrong one.
As mention above, there are a variety of training that needs to be completed throughout the program. Whether that's through workload, training or Modules - you are constantly pushed throughtout to stop plateauing. Doesn't matter if you are a school leaver to a aspiration business leader - all development program at Laing O'Rourke are structured the same, with the same level of support provided through managers, private mentors etc.

Salary wise, there can be frustrations as you develop through the program. Especially years 3 - 5 where you are given more responsibilities and doing the same type of work as some of your colleagues who are paid 4x more. However this is understandable due to there experiences as well as our degree being paid for. Unlike other organization, at Laing O'Rourke all travel expenses related to work or university are reimbursable which is a positive. In addition there are other benefits such as company cars etc which are great.
Yes, throughout my university and work you are invited to a few events. This is also supported by enrolling onto an accredited body such as RICS,.
Yes
Great opportunities for movement within the business whether it crossing fields into a different department you will always be supported.
Assessment day, tent to be group interview. With most group interviews it tends to be 'dog eat dog' in the fact everyone want to be heard. At an assessment at Laing O'Rourke, if you don't listen to others view and try and constantly voice your, you wont be successful. This is the construction industry, where you are required to be part of a bigger group and therefore be collaborative.
