job title is an apprentice engineer. this involves me going to college 5 days a week mostly, more recently, 4 days on site and 1 day in college.
Absolutely, during the course of being at college from September to now, I have learned and acquired the skills to use lathes, milling machines, do basic bench fitting exercises. More recently, working in the mechanical maintenance workshop, and electronics workshops. All newly acquired skills.
I enjoy the program I am on very much. Mainly the electronics section as I find the mechanical maintenance workshop fairly tedious at times, I feel due to the nature of the activities undertaken.
I feel valued highly by Bakkavor, as now on site, new apprentices are being given all the things necessary to work on site long term, for example locker facilities.
During the course there has been a lot of chopping and changing to the content in the program. an example of this has been timetables. students doing the food and drink qualification including myself have received multiple copies of the timetable, NWTC have provided. Each one differs.
A lot has been done by the training provider in order to improve the quality of their services. An example of which is the changing around of staffing arrangements. With our class, and others.
I feel my manager, the HR department, my mentor are all very supportive, and keep us as apprentices up to date with everything planned and what is going on. They are also good at responding to any queries we may have.
My salary definitely meets my costs, although a change of transportation arrangements meant I had to catch a train for around a week, to the training provider. Which was very expensive in comparison to other students attending. I discovered I was paying daily what some students were paying weekly for transportation.
The apprentice manager has organised 3 trips for this first year, 2 to Peterborough, one earlier and one later, 1 is to Newark which takes place in-between these two other trips.
Yes
Bakkavor looks after all employees and provides them with a high level of equipment and knowledge to do the job.
Be yourself in the interview, also helps if you have a strong passion for the area of work you want to go into
