I currently work in the Corporate Credit Research Team in M&G's Fixed Income Department, where I am a Credit Fund Manager Assistant (I was offered this role after completing my apprenticeship with this team). On a day-to-day basis, I support two senior analysts, who cover the Utilities and Food Retail sectors, and the rest of my team. An example of the work I carry out would include updating a financial model for a supermarket we are invested in, and facilitating the corporate action process between the corporate actions team, the fund manager and the analyst.
During my apprenticeship I undertook the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) which consists of three exams and the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) which is coursework based. As a requirement for M&G Apprentices, we attended the events and seminars hosted by Investment 2020 (i2020). These courses were very useful in helping with the transition between school-life and work-life. In addition to the above, I had the opportunity to work with very senior people on a day-to-day basis and learnt many skills from them which I use on a daily basis.
I really enjoyed the apprenticeship programme with M&G and feel no regrets about not going to university (or picking another option after A Levels). I find my work interesting and I enjoy working with my team members. This programme surpassed my expectations and I really look forward to continuing my career with M&G in my current team.
Extremely valued, everything I do in my job is recognised by my manager and team members. During the programme, I had the opportunity to participate in an M&G Project based around the Millennial generation. I really enjoyed working on this project as I was able to work with other apprentices, graduates, senior people from around the business, and two of the board members of M&G.
Since most M&G apprentices start their course during different times of the year, the structure of the programme seems slightly distorted at times - meaning we didn't always complete all our training events together. However, I had regular meetings with my manager, HR and my mentor which made me feel like I had a lot of support.
My training provider was hard to reach at times, but we had regular monthly meetings which ultimately helped me finish my course within a reasonable time frame.
Overall, I do feel like I have a lot of support from my employer, particularly from the HR team and my mentor.
My salary completely covers all of my monthly expenses, with disposable income (I currently live outside of London with my parents)
M&G offers the opportunity to use two work days a year as volunteering days.
