  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role title is Admin/Arranger with Co-Operative Funeralcare. My duties are to give administrative support and assistance to our Funeral Directors, deal directly when necessary with bereaved families, look after the Deceased who are brought into our care and work together as a Team with other colleagues to provide the best possible service we can. The administration also involves inputting funeral arrangements on to the computer system, dealing with invoices and telephone calls/queries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills and hope to continue learning many more. I have learnt a great deal about Funeralcare in general and just exactly how it works and why it is so important to get everything just right for the people we are here for. There is still so much more to learn and I expect to be assisted with this throughout the course of my NVQ 2 qualification.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is early days for me yet within the programme but I do feel extremely motivated. I feel the programme and assistance offered by the course hosts can only benefit my development, both personally and professionally. The conversations and workbooks so far have already given me ideas on how to expand my knowledge and thereby develop my abilities as much as possible.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Co-op?
  • I feel very much valued by the Co-Op. Firstly I feel privileged to have been offered such a role, as the interview process was very detailed, in depth and thorough. Once formally offered the position and commenced employment, I have had complete support from Colleagues, Management, I have been provided with a uniform and now enrolled on to a course which promises to enable my career to go from strength to strength within the Co-Op.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Again, it's early days, but from the information provided, verbally, in paper form and the email contents, I feel a lot of thought and planning has gone into this programme in order to make it successful for those who pursue it. It has been set out in a manner suitable to those in Funeralcare, catering for the unpredictability of the industry but putting the students first.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • As yet, the only training received has been the sign up day, emails and workbooks. However, everything was explained very clearly and concisely at the sign up event, and I am confident my training provider will help and guide me every step of the way whenever I need it. I am very much looking forward to the experience and knowledge this will bring, together with working alongside such professionals.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employers have been nothing less than 100% supportive in me entering into this programme. It is a requisite of the role, however, they are very enthusiastic and encouraging when it comes to attending any events in relation to this programme, offering the travelling and time facilities required and I feel happy that I am going to be given the time I need in order to put all my efforts in this course and qualification.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I am happy with my salary. Of course, everyone would say they would like to get paid more - who doesn't. However, on a realistic level, this role is not just about money, it is about what we can offer, getting the satisfaction back from what we can do for people. Bottom line is my salary covers my living costs. I get reimbursed for any travelling expenses incurred and for any overtime I give. It seems a fair and adequate salary in my opinion.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are absolutely loads of opportunities outside of work. One of the things attached to this role is being involved with the community. So far I have had a good few meetings with people from charitable organisations, community causes and community hubs regarding what involvement I can have with them. Also, I have arranged Funeral Plans in my own time with family. This gives me the opportunity to talk with people, find out their needs and help them get what they want. Peace of mind mainly.

  • 9. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because the Co-Op is a name which has run in family homes across many generations. Co-Op are an excellent Group to work for, they are fair, supportive, enthusiastic and have the interests of people at heart. They continually strive to achieve the best they can, both within the Group for employees and for the general public. I am confident I have a good, long, prosperous career ahead of me within the Co-Op Group and would happily encourage any of my friends and family to consider employment with Co-Op. There is a lot of pride to be felt, and satisfaction to be gained, especially within Funeralcare.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • Go for it! You could do a lot worse. Just apply, it's very easy. You will be kept informed of what is happening with your application, you will be made to feel at ease the whole way through, and just be yourself. The Co-Op are a very friendly, familiar and successful Group. You will be continuously encouraged to be natural. They will want to see who you really are to ensure you will fit into your role in the right way.
