I am a mechanical engineering apprentice that has chosen to go down a CAD Pathway. My day-to-day role includes operating my teams 3D printer, developing models to be produced on the 3D Printer or in the workshop. Fixing existing CAD Models to be run through different programs. I also spend time in the workshop and lab machining components and soldering parts up.
Throughout the apprenticeship I have learnt lots of new skills. I had never used a machine before I came here and had minimal CAD Experience. Even after leaving the training providers, I am still learning new things all the time and developing the skills I was taught in the training centre.
I really enjoy the work that I do, and working for DSTL has enabled me to work in areas that I wouldn't have had a chance to if I had worked for different companies, as there is such a large variety of work taking place. I am always busy, but with enjoyable tasks and work in a really good team that are always happy to help if when I need it.
I feel like all the work that I produce is appreciated by DSTL adn I am able to get involved in a large variety of tasks.
It is a well organised programme with your time split in 3 month blocks between the company and the training provider. All of the basic things we need to know when we go out into the company is taught by the training provider.
I receive a good amount of support from the training provider, even when not working directly with the people there.
I receive a lot of support from my employer, in both work and personal life.
My salary easily covers my living costs, but everyone can always do with a pay rise!
With DSTL, I have had the chance to go out to a large number of STEM events at schools and cadet camps. This has really helped to improve my communication skills, as I now feel confident standing up and talking in front of a large group of people.
Yes
I feel that DSTL is a really good place to work with lots of perks, interesting work and lots of support for all employees.
If people were applying to work at DSTL I would say that they need to try and find out as much about the company as possible even though it is difficult, as it was certainly a surprise to me when I found out just some of the stuff that went on during my interview and that carries on to my day-today job.
