The first two years of my apprenticeship is based away from the plant. It’s on a naval base and is similar to a college. It involves lots of courses to allow me to get Btecs and nvqs. I work 7 hours paid a day. Within these ours we have 1 and a half hour lessons in which we learn how to become an engineer in either a mechanical, electrical or CNI disciplines.
I have learned many new skills on this pprentiveship including filing, hacksawing, grinding, bending, and fixing things together. I’ve learned how to read work plans and complete a task looking at an engineer drawing. I have also developed my lathe skills further during my machining course.
I love the programme as it is based away from home and you get to meet so many new people from different stations. Here I have made many new friends for life, and on the plus side we get to travel to different countries during our life skills course on this apprenticeship
I feel very valued as we get to go for meals with our co ordinators, we get councilling if needed to introduce us to life away from home and we get many opportunities.
It’s very well organised as we are put in classes in our first year then after we have chose a discipline we are put with all electical or mechanical or CNI apprentices to learn more about the chosen discipline and the first year consists of information about all 3 diciplones.
We always have people to speak to and people to email. We get 12 weekly reports in which are discussed with our instructor which gives us the support we need .
I receive lots of support as I just have to send an email and things are put in place if they need to be.
It meets my cost as our salary is basically spending money as everything including meals to accommodation is paid for and trips home once a month.
There are many opportunities outside work and events that the apprentices organise in order to bond with everyone.
