  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My current job role is Trainee Quantity Surveyor. The daily tasks that I complete as part of this role is checking and recording the weather forecast for the day in case any bad weather disrupts construction onsite, I can use this as evidence if any delays occur. I further put to together a daily report which involves pictures of the site which shows how construction is developed. This gives me an understanding of the steps which are made to bring a building together. I further process any orders which are needed to be put together and monthly I complete valuations and payment trackers.

  • -CITB Health and Safety Awareness - Face fit testing qualified - Internally, I have been trained to use 4Projects software - Currently completing my HNC in Construction Management Personally I feel as though I have learnt that a lot in terms of working rather than studying A-Levels. This is because I now hold much more responsibility.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my daily programme as this allows me to be a part of the team and carry out my own responsibilities. This programme has met my expectations as these are good roles to undertake in order to shape my future learning. This programme will further help me gain more responsibilities in the future once I show I am competent.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Equans?
  • Yes I am supported as I have been give the opportunity with tasks and training to succeed. If I have any questions I know that I can ask anyone at work and they will be happy to help. Engie provide recognition to employees via awards and newsletters. I was a part of a successful team that raised money for charity at work and we were recognised for our good work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction I received when I first started was great this is because I was provided with plenty of information about the company, how we go about our work and what I needed to know. Therefore once I started I could fit right in and start working. Engie put in place training for me and so I attend college every Friday and when any training courses that are suitable for my development are available I am able to attend. This HNC course helps provide me with an understanding of construction processes.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I am given feedback on my assignments and have the opportunity to improve once marked. On Fridays at college my tutor will answer any questions that I have and I am shown what I can do to improve in order to improve my assignments. This is helpful as I can continually improve my work. During the week, I could always e-mail my tutor if stuck too.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I believe that I receive a very good salary and package and it enables me to have a good social life outside of work, I work in Leytonstone in London currently but I live in Luton and Engie provide and cover my travel costs meaning that I do have to spend my own money out on this expense which is good!

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Company events and activities do occur throughout the year whether this be all company employees meet up and go for a drink. As a company we always seeks to benefit local communities that we are working in, working with local schools is one opportunity that I have been involved in which involved me speaking to sixth form students about my job and how to get involved in surveying. Personally I play football on Monday nights with a small number of Engie employees this is a fun and good way of interacting with colleagues outside of work.

  • 9. Would you recommend Equans to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Engie is a very supportive company who act in your best interests, as a company I have been able to benefit from the various amounts of training and time dedicated to my development. Engie hold TAG days where all trainees and assistants are able to come together to share their site experiences and so I always feel that I am constantly learning whether this be through other TAGS or fully qualified members of staff.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Equans?
  • Try to participate in as many opportunities, training and experiences as possible as they can all lead to obtaining new and useful skills which you apply in the workplace. Try to understand the job you are applying and find out some background knowledge before the interview as using terms specific to the role and showing a keen interest will look good in front of employers. Do not give up if one interview does not go so well because if you are passionate about what you are applying for then eventually you will get your opportunity.
