I am currently a senior associate in the assurance department of PwC. My day to day involves a lot of travelling as we mostly work from the client's office. Different areas of the financial statement are assigned to all members of the team to audit. As I am now responsible for junior members of the team, I ensure they receive coaching on the areas they are assigned and I also receive coaching from people above me. There is a lot of emphasis on teamwork and forming networks and relationships within the team and with the client.
Over the course of my 3 placements with the firm and now having joined full time, my knowledge of accounting/audit has vastly improved. I am so much more confident when talking to the client as from early on I got exposure to very senior members of the client's team such as the Financial Director/Controller. This pushed me to be grounded in the knowledge of the accounts, learn first hand about a wide range of industries and gain additional knowledge from seasoned people in the field.
I really enjoyed meeting a wide range of young people who work hard and play hard. My office in particular organises a lot of social events to help balance how busy certain seasons are. While at University, it was also great to be surrounded by people who were working towards the same goal as I was. It was a great place to be for motivation, encouragement and just all round fun.
I have to say that I do not feel as valued as I feel I should be. I know there are times when the company makes an effort but I feel that more of an effort should be made in terms of overtime pay (which do not apply to senior associates and above).
The programme was very well structured with the split of University and placements. It was well supported with direct communication with lecturers, managers in PwC and resourcing.
We had training sessions every year to prepare us for placements. We also had a module dedicated to understanding the work environment within PwC before we went for our first ever placement which really helped to ease us into the office.
PwC also provide trainings on the conduct, indepence, accounting standards and much more every year. Resourcing within my office is also very supportive and always willing to assist with shaping my portfolio and well being
I believe we get paid really well and it definitely meets all my costs. I am able to afford my rent in a good area and a spacious apartment, a car, my bills, save and still be able to meet my day to day costs
There are loads of opportunities outside of work such as the PwC one day which a day set aside for all employees to support a charity of their choice. There are also a lot of events hosted by the firm for networking or other activities
