I am a mechanical technician apprentice and my daily tasks are learning about new systems like pumps, valves and compressors then carrying out work and tests on these subjects. My daily interactions are talking to instructors and my peers to help each other with the task ahead. I am responsible for my own learning and ensuring I push myself and the instructor to make sure i learn as much as I can
Not only have i learnt about new systems in a power station as well improving my knowledge about vehicles etc. I have developed my tool work and mechanical comptenacy and became more confident in jobs due to this.
I really enjoy this program but involves meeting new people as well as learning about my future job, which i have a keen interest in. As well as this during the apprenticeship the company make an effort to ensure we know that we are an important asset due to a lot of different presentations and training, as well as being sent on different life skill trips. The experience has really exceeded my expectations
I feel very valued because of all the time and effort put into us and this is portrayed by the company sending different people in different roles to the academy to carry out different presentations and training schemes. Also within the acadamy you get recognition if you are doing the job well
The program is very organised because in the first year we had a little insight into all three disciplines, then in the second years and beyond you focus on the disciplines you wanted to do. This is very effective because you can ensure that you are choosing the correct discipline for you. As well as this a lot of different training opportunities are available to us throughout the apprenticeship.
I feel very supported, not only by the instructor but by the coordinates. The instructors are helpful because if we are struggling the aqcuire different resources to help understand the concept, for example take us into the workshop to show us a visual of the system or equipment we are learning about.
I feel very supported by my employer because we get emails to checking we are coping well, as well as meet up for a catch up about how we are doing and about the power station.
I feel like the salary is very fair because our accommodation and food is paid for by the company, therefore the money we receive is for traveling home not on set travel weekends and social activities, which means it is very social which makes the overall experience more enjoyable.
There are many opportunities outside of work, the main being different sporting activities due to all of the different facilities available to us, like the football pitch, squash court, gym etc. Not only is there sporting opportunities you can also get involved in learning french and joining in on weekly debates.
Yes
I feel like this apprenticeship is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the field and this is shown from the age range on the apprenticeship. The reason for this being the different opportunities that we have and the different roles that can be achieved within the company from the apprenticehsip
The advice i would give is to try and show yourself in the best way, meaning not to be shy by explaining why you would be good for the job or different projects etc that you have been involved in. As for the interviews and assessment days my advice would be to prepare because this will make them less nervous and the interviewer will be able to tell if you have prepared and if you haven't then this would have a negative affect on your image.
